Death* | 8 Apr 1879 | Abel died on 8 Apr 1879 at Fairfield, Franklin Co, IN, at age 82. Our venerable friend, Abel Withrow--one of the best known, and best men ever residing here--died Tuesday, at the residence of his son-in-law, Paul Stage, at Fairfield, Franklin county. The deceased was born in Greenbrier county, West Virginia, September 30, 1796, and married there; came to Indiana, in 1831, and to this place in 1848, where he continued to reside until a couple of years ago. He was thrice married, all his wives dying before him, and was the father of sixteen children, eight of whom are now living. Father Withrow held several public positions here; constable and coroner a number of terms, and jailor from 1849 until 1874, and never failed in a public duty. He had been a member of the Baptist church over fifty years.1 |
Biography* | | "Amwell Baptist Church, according to James O. A. Deitz, was organized at a place on Lick Creek, now known as Low Gap. It was organized at Abel Withrow's on April 22, 1824, on a Thursday. Account of the organization of the church, as copied from the minutes of the meeting, states that 'The preceding constitution was entered into by 20 members at Abel Withrow's in the Gap of Lick Creek and the Big Meadows on April 22, 1824". (From "Hopewell Baptist Church Started in 1790" by Shirley Donnelly [1967])
"Abel Withrow defeated J. M. Watson by 171 for office of county coroner in Decatur County election on October 14, 1863. Party spirit ran high during the civil War and personal encounters on election day were of very frequent occurrence. On October 14, 1863, an election was held for state and county officials, and although the state went Democratic, Decatur returned a majority for the Union ticket." (Warding Hist. Decatur Co., IN, p. 476.) |
