James Smith
He was born in Pendleton county, WV. Early in his life he was brought to Greenbrier county, where he grew into manhood and spent his life. In 1847 he was married to Sarah McClung. To them were born nine children--seven boys and two girls. After the death of Sarah Smith in 1861 he was married the second time to Martha Callison in 1863. To this union were born five children-four boys and one girl. Several of his family are now supporters of the M.E. Church, South.
Bro. Smith professed faith in Christ in 1860 at a protracted prayer-meeting, and later was received into the Baptist church by Rev. Walker. He was a devoted Christian; he was a constant attendant at Sabbath school and prayer-meeting and willing to do his part in supporting the church and helping the needy. He possessed no disposition to be in matters that did not concern him. He was a constant sufferer for several years and had a stroke or two of paralysis, which disabled him for work or even recreation. He loved the associations of Christians and was willing to give his religious experience at the fireside when in his judgment it would benefit others. Some of his last expressions were acknowledging Christ to be his Saviour. He died on the morning of April 16, 1900, and the day following was buried at Amwell Baptist Church, the funeral services being conducted by the writer of this sketch. May blessings rest upon the bereaved.
