Biography | Joel Yancy Rhodes, now a resident of Fayette co., was born in Greenbrier co., WV, and united with the Gatewood Missionary Baptist Church Jan. 5, 1889; was baptized by Rev. A.M. Neal. His parents, David Rhodes, Sr., and Rebecca (Cary) Rhodes, were born in Albemarle co, VA; his father died in Fayetteville in 1866; his mother lives with David Rhodes, Jr., brother of Joel, on Paint Creek, Fayette co. David Rhodes, Sr., was a soldier of the war of 1812, and his widow now draws a pension for that service. Joel Y. Rhodes was in service in the late war 2 years, in Capt. Thurmond's Company, C.S.A. His wife, Mary J., the daughter of John D. and Nancy (Kincaid) Withrow, is a member of the Bethel Baptist Church at Oak Hill. She united with this church 37 years ago. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes were named: Harlow, John Yancy, Andrew H., Jackson, Nancy M., George W., David Lee, James T., Noah Judson and Samuel Davis. Jackson died in 1862; George W. in 1872. Nancy M. joined the Gatewood Missionary Baptist Church, and was baptized on the same day her father was. David Lee joined the same church, and was baptized by Rev. A.M. Neal Jan. 3. 1889.2 | |
