H. M. Rodes Is Death Victim

Former Beckley Man Dies at Residence in Meadow Creek

H. M. Rodes, 52, a former resident of Beckley, died at his home at Meadow Creek, after a brief illness yesterday morning; it was learned here last night. Mr. Rodes moved from Beckley to Meadow Creek about 12 years ago, where he conducted a general store business. He is survived by his widow and one son. He was a member of the Beckley Masonic Lodge.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home. Interment will be made in a nearby cemetery, at which Hinton Lodge of the Masons will officiate. A number of loyal Masons will leave Friday morning in time to take train No. 13(?) from Hinton.3,4

Rites for Hinton Man's Mother Will Be Held Saturday

Hinton - Oct. 23 - Mrs. Lenora McCutcheon Rodes, of Meadow Creek, mother of T. G. Rodes, of Hinton, died at 8:40 o'clock Thursday morning at the Hinton hospital. She became ill about six weeks ago, and was admitted to the hospital last week, suffering from pneumonia.

The daughter of Bernard McCutcheon and Martha Crane McCutcheon, of Summersville, she had resided at Meadow Creek for 38 years. Her husband, H. M. Rodes, a prominent Raleigh county lumber man, died several years ago.

The body was removed to the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors on Temple Street, and will remain there until time for the funeral services, which will be conducted at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Meadow Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons; T. G. Rodes, of Hinton; D. G. Rodes, of Meadow Creek, and Nye G. Rodes, of Logan; four daughters; Mrs. J. G. Taylor, of Wheeling; Mrs. E. T. Donnally, of Charleston; Mrs. G. M. Sandefer, of Washington, D.C., and Miss Ellen Axson Rodes, of Charleston; two brothers; Dr. L. N. McCutcheon, of Richwood, and Dr. Luster McCutcheon, of Marlinton; one sister, Mrs, Laura Graham, of Summersville; 13 grand children and four great grandchildren.1,3

MRS. GRAHAM DIES AT RESIDENCE HERE
Mrs. Sarah Flint Graham, 98, honorary deaconess and the oldest member of the Baptist Temple, died late Sunday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Homer Thompson of 1526 Washington St., E., after a brief illness. She was the widow of Joseph U. Graham, a lumberman, whom she married Jan. 7, 1868 at Alderson.

Services will be held today at 4:30 p.m. at the Thompson residence with Rev. Strother A. Campbell of the Baptist temple officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial park in charge of the Scales mortuary. The family has requested that flowers be omitted.

Mrs. Graham, the daughter of Jeremiah D. Flint and Lucinda Arbaugh Flint, was born May 18, 1846 on her father's farm near the present location of the Patrick St. bridge. She lived in Summers county for several years returning to this county about 44 years ago.

Also surviving are four other daughters, Mrs. Zora E. Burdett, Mrs. Robert Escham and Mrs. Robert Sullivan, all of Charleston, and Mrs. Hettie Burdette of Ardsley, N. Y., 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.3

Jo Ellen was the loving daughter of John E. and Marjorie Burdette, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her best friend and husband of 62 years, James S. Kerr, her special dog, Lady and brother Ed Burdette and wife Wanda of Charleston, WV and niece, Cindy Ellis of Gulfport, MS.

Jo and her husband Jim were seldom apart and were truly devoted to each other. Jo Ellen was a 1952 graduate of Hinton High School and the Bluefield Business School. She was the Office Manager of the James S. Kerr Real Estate Agency in Hinton for the last 40 years. She was an avid outdoors person when physically able. In later years, she and her husband enjoyed long drives in the remote countryside looking for bear sightings and watching other wildlife.

Jo Ellen will be remembered for her thoughtfulness and remembrance of others. We all would be well served if we could adopt her outlook on life and her attitude in the face of adversity.

Our family wishes to recognize the care provided her by Carol Bishop and Linda Ball. We would also recognize the staff of Bowers Hospice House for the kind quality care and attention they provided.

Funeral services for Jo Ellen will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday February 13, 2019 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Jeff Canterbury officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.2
