Biography* "Opal and Zick Zickafoose lived in Green Sulphur Springs, Summers Co., WV after they got married. They lived in the John L. George house (later owned by McGraws and later owned by Frank Bragg). Their son Jack was born while they lived in that house in 1936. In 1938 they moved to Sandstone to be closer to their work. In 1940 they moved back to Green Sulphur Springs and bought the house and 5 acres from a cousin who lived in Hinton. They later bought 100 acres which joined the original 5 acres. Their son David, and daughter Erma June were born in that house. In August, 1953, Zick, Opal and their three children moved to Trenton, Florida to teach school in Gilchrist Co., in North Florida. Jack left home in the fall of 1954 to go to school and then to work in Bradenton, FL. David went to the University of Florida and Medical School in 1957. He then went to Johns Hopkins, then to New Oxford, PA to set up practice there. Erma June married and lives in Hudson, FL."9

SANDSTONE — Erma Maydell Ward, 78, of Sandstone, died Thursday, January 20, 2011, at the Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale following a long illness.

Born September 7, 1932, at Sandstone, she is the daughter of the late Jesse S. and Merle Jane Fox Johnson.

Maydell was a lifelong member of the Laurel Creek Baptist Church and a retired cook for the Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital. Maydell had a passion for her family that extended to her friends. She enjoyed family functions including the Ward Reunion and the Sandstone All – Class Reunion. Reminiscing about old times with her lifelong friends and treating everyone equal were traits she instilled in the many lives she touched. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family and will be greatly missed by all that loved her.

Preceding her in death are her first husband Oscar (Bob) Bragg and her second husband Stanley Ward; one brother Pastor Eddie Johnson and a special uncle Frank Johnson.

She is survived by her children: Linda Pack and husband Harold of Phoenix, AZ, Jessica Drake of Sandstone, James Bragg of Sandstone, Stanley Ward and wife Christine of Pipestem and Roger Ward and wife Mattie of Forest, VA; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive. Special niece: Diana Price of Hinton, and a special nephew: Mark Ward of Sandstone, a special sister-in-law: Betty M. (Blondie) Johnson of Hinton, beloved pets Buddy and Abraham.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2011, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor Chapel with Pastors Melvin Wills and Wanda Gwinn officiating. Burial will follow in the King Cemetery at Sandstone. Friends may call from noon till time of service on Sunday. Men of the Laurel Creek Baptist Church will service as pallbearers.

James R. Bragg, 69, of Sandstone went home to be with the Lord Thursday April 14, 2022 at his home following a long illness.

Born September 20, 1952 at Hinton he was the son of the late Oscar “Bob” and Erma Maydell Johnson Bragg Ward. James was a graduate of Hinton High School and Marshall University. He worked for many years as a Social Worker and in Vocational Rehabilitation for the State of West Virginia and he enjoyed studying history, reading and spending time with his family.

Preceded in death by two step brothers, Stanley and Roger Ward.

Those left to cherish his memory include two sisters, Linda Bragg Pack and husband Harold “Pete” and Jessica Drake; niece, Sharon Pack Mews; two nephews, Daniel and Douglas Pack; sister-in-law, Christine Ward and her son John and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Harold “Pete” Pack officiating. Burial will follow in the King Cemetery on Swell Mountain.2
