Biography JOHN DUFFY ALDERSON.
Few men in this State have seen as much of its legislative bodies as the subject ot this sketch; a native of Nicholas county, born November 29, 1854. When eighteen years of age he was a page in the 1872 Constitutional Convention of West Virginia; Senate Doorkeeper in 1872-’3; Sergeant-at-Arms for the Senates of 1875- 77- 79-81 ; Senate Clerk in 1883-85-87 — nine consecutive sessions in our legislative halls.
By persevering study, under difficulties incident to his part of the State, Mr. Alderson prepared himself for a course of legal studies, fitted himself for practice and opened office at Nicholas Court House, January 1, 1876, and practiced with such marked ability as to secure, in the following April, the appointment of Prosecuting Attorney for Nicholas and Webster counties, and then the election thereto, serving as such in 1876, 1880-’81.
Having been brought up on a farm, he has never lost the relish for agricultural life, but has always lived and labored as a farmer, except when engaged in his profession or at the State Capitol.
By his own exertions and the exercise of strict integrity, Mr. Alderson has held the esteem of all with whom he came in contact since his boyhood. Mr. Alderson was the Democratic candidate for Congress in the Third District in 1888, and conducted a vigorous and able campaign. The contest was very close, but Mr. Alderson received the certificate of election and was enrolled by the Clerk as a member of the Fifty-first Congress.4

Biography* Obituary of Joseph A. Alderson, Esq. Saturday morning, March 4, 1916, Mr. Alderson had been in failing health for more than 2 years and while his friends had almost lost hope of his complete recovery, his death was not expected and came as a surprise to the community. Mr. Alderson was 57 years of age, a native of Nicholas County, and lived his entire life in the county. On January 9, 1886, he was married to Miss Laura Peck, daughter of the late John E. Peck. He served the county as County Superintendent of Schools, Circuit Clerk and County Clerk, and in each of these positions he served the public faithfully with honor to himself and satisfaction to the public. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church at this place and served as Clerk of Hopewell Baptist Association for 25 years. In his death the community loses a valued member and the county one of her strongest and most highly esteemed citizens. His wife and 9 children and 2 brothers survive him and to them we extend our deepest sympathy in their hour of bereavement. Interment was on the ____ Peck farm and services held in the Baptist Church. He was buried with Mason's rites by Summerville Lodge A.F. and A.M. of which he had long been a member and at one time Worshipful Master. Mary Ann 'Nannie' Tiffany1

F, #3148, b. 14 Sep 1860, d. 1947
FatherHugh Snidow Tiffany
MotherSusan McDaniel
Biography* Women Writers Along the Rivers
Atchison County, KS
Nannie Tiffany Alderson (1860 - 1947)

Alderson met her husband while visiting relatives in Atchison, Kansas (1877-1881). She grew up on a Southern plantation, and the free-wheeling nature of the Western town of Atchison appealed to her. For example, women could work outside the home without lowering their social status in Atchison.

After Alderson married, she and her husband, Walt, ranched in Wyoming. Alderson's memoirs were first published in 1942; they have been reissued recently in paperback and are readily avail- able: Alderson, Nannie T., and Helena Hungton Smith. A Bride Goes West. New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1942. (The Atchison Public Library, Atchison, Kansas, has an autographed copy of the 1942 edition; the reissued paperback version of A Bride Goes West is available in the Women Writers Along the Rivers archives. Atchison, Kansas, is described in pages 8-15 of the auto- biography.)

Alderson returned to Atchison, Kansas, and spent her last thirty winters there with her cousin, Effie Symms. In the summers, Alderson lived on a ranch operated by her relatives near Sheridan, Wyoming.
