David Bolton

M, #17998, b. circa 1774, d. before Dec 1856
Research Note* The Family of David Bolton and Barbara Fridley

According to the 1810 and 1820 censuses of Rockingham Co, VA, David Bolton and family were living there with 5 possible children--1 male and 4 females--in 1810 and 9--3 males and 6 females--in 1820. David disappeared from the Rockingham Co, VA census after 1820, but in 1830, a David Bolton, of the proper age range, and wife, of the proper age range for Barbara, were found in Monroe Twp, Richland Co, OH. The household had 12 persons, including 3 females born after 1820. In 1840, David Bolton was enumerated in Green Twp, Richland Co, OH, with 3 younger females. It is assumed that this is David Bolton of Rockingham Co, VA along with his wife Barbara, who most likely died in Richland Co, OH prior to David's removal before 1848 to Wabash Twp, Fountain Co, IN where he remarried to Sarah Copeland Harper, a widow, on 4 June 1848 and by whom he had 2 more known children, Susan and Abraham Bolton.

Examination of tax lists support this assumption: David (often listed as David Sr to distinguish him from a younger David Bolton, listed often as David Jr) was listed in the personal property tax lists of Rockingham Co from 1820 to 1827 (no record in 1822), but then disappears. In the 1828 property tax list of Worthington Twp, Richland Co, OH, a David Bolton appears for the first time. He is subsequently listed in Monroe Twp, Richland Co, OH in 1829, and appears in the census there in 1830.

No documentary evidence of their children has been found. The following are probable and possible children, with comments on the evidence and assumptions. Broadly, it is assumed that some/all of the age-appropriate Boltons (i.e. matching the age/sex categories in the 1810-1830 censuses) in Richland Co, OH and Fountain Co, IN are possible children of David and Barbara.

Online genealogies (including Ancestry, FamilySearch, and personal sites) list three children of David and Barbara: Malinda, Harriet, and Gideon, but with no supporting documentation. They also show Barbara's death in 1847 based on the gravestone (not photographed) of a Barbara Bolton in the Keezletown (Rockingham Co, VA) Cemetery. Given the number of Bolton families in Rockingham Co at the time, it is not possible to determine whether this is David's wife or another Barbara Bolton (a Barbara Bolton, age 88, appeared in the 1850 census). Since a female of Barbara's age appears with David Bolton in Richland Co, OH in 1830 and 1840, it is assumed she lived and died there. It seems unlikely that she would have been transported back to Rockingham Co. for burial.

     1. Elizabeth Bolton. b. c. 1803 in VA (1850, 1860 censuses). She married Allison Breeden on 22 December 1822 in Rockingham Co, VA. Allison remarried to Margaret Payne in 1867 in Rockingham Co, and it is assumed that Elizabeth had died before then.
Assumptions on parentage: An FGS from A.J. Heck, Warrensburg, MO, dated 15 August 1979 identified David Bolton & Barbara Fridley as the parents of Elizabeth Bolton Breeden (3rd great grandparents of Mrs. A. J. Heck, nee Iona Marie Fleshman, descendant of Branson S. Breeden, son of Allison & Elizabeth Bolton Breeden)
     2. Harriett Bolton, b. c. 1809 in VA. She married John S. Berry, a War of 1812 veteran sometime around 1825. In his War of 1812 pension application in 1871, he listed his wife as "Harriett Bolton" whom he married in 1825 at Mt Clinton, Rockingham Co, VA, but a congregant record for the St John's Church (summarized on Harriett's FindAGrave page) noted that she was listed as Harriett Bolton in 1826. She was enumerated with John through the 1870 census, after which no further documentation on her has been found. The record of her children is uncertain. Three children were listed in the 1850 census (Benjamin K. b. 1830; John F, b. 1833, and Sarah, b. c 1845), but death certificates have been found of a daughter Johanna (b. 1842, md Joseph Black) who later lived in Burlington, Iowa and whose death certificate in 1926 lists her parents as "John Berry" and "Harriett Higgins", while the death certificate of Maggie J. Winegord (b. 1846) in Keezletown, VA in 1912 lists her parents as "John Berry" and "Harriet Fultz". Neither of these daughters appeared in the 1850 census
Assumptions on parentage: Married in Rockingham Co prior to the departure of David & Barbara; of an appropriate age category based on the 1810 and 1820 censuses
     3. Malinda Bolton, b. c. 1811 in VA, assumed to be one of the females age 15-20 in the 1830 Richland Co, OH census. She married in Fountain Co, IN in 1838 and is found there in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. She is not enumerated in 1870 and assumed to have died.
Assumptions on parentage: 8cM/1 segment match with a descendant of Malinda Bolton Rushing on ThruLines (Ancestry.com)
     4. Debba Bolton, b. c. 1810-1815. In Richland Co OH, there is a marriage of Miss Debba Bolton to James Hite on 28 July 1836. There is a James Hite (spelled Hiatt) in Ashland Co, OH (neighbor of Richland Co) in 1840, male age 30-40 and female age 20-30, with 5 apparent children all over the age of 5, likely the children of James' first wife. James Hite remarried to Catharine Thomas on 19 September 1839 in Richland Co, suggesting Debba had died. If this is the same James Hite, he was born c 1804 in VA (perhaps Hardy Co). In the 1850 census, James Hite was enumerated with Catharine in Ashland Co with 2 children born in the 1840s. It is unlikely he and Debba Bolton had any children.
Assumptions on parentage: resided in the same county as David, and of an appropriate age category for the daughters listed there in 1830
     5. Richard Bolton, b. c. 1810-1815, say c 1814. Richard is known only from his marriage in Richland Co, OH in 1839 and his head-of-household census enumeration in 1840 in Richland Co, OH. His wife Rose Ann (married name Williams in marriage record) remarried to George Smith in 1854 in Richland Co, OH, but no record of the family has yet been found in 1850. It is assumed Richard died before Rose's remarriage.
Assumptions on parentage: resided in same county as David, and of an appropriate age category for the sons listed there in 1830.
     6. Phebe Bolton, bc 1818, VA (1850 Richland Co, OH), md Isaac Miller in Richland Co, OH in 1840. She and Isaac moved to Richland Twp, Grant Co, IN by 1860, and they resided there in 1870 and 1880. No further information after 1880
Assumptions on parentage: resided in same county as David, and of an appropriate age category for the daughters listed there in 1830
     7. Gideon Bolton, bc 1818, Rockingham Co, VA. Gideon's Civil War Muster in Illinois stated that he was born in Harris[on]burg, (Rockingham Co), VA, and his age in 1850 Liberty Twp, Parke Co, IN places his birth c. 1818, accordant with the males in the 1830 census of David Bolton. He married in Fountain Co, IN in 1840, but has not been found in the 1840 census. He later lived in Illinois, returned to Fountain Co, IN, then migrated before 1887 to Lyon Co, KS (where his son John David Bolton lived). He died in 1890 in Chicago Mound, Lyon Co, KS
Assumptions on parentage: Married in Fountain Co, IN, where David later lived and died, and was of an appropriate age for the categories of sons in the 1830 Richland Co, OH census.
     8. Lucinda Bolton, bc 1820-1825. Lucinda married Lewis W. Rusing (possibly a brother of Aquilla Rusing who married Malinda Bolton) in Fountain Co, IN in 1844. No further information on this couple has been found.
Assumptions on parentage: married in Fountain Co, IN and of an appropriate age category for the daughters listed in the 1830 Richland Co, OH census of David Bolton

Fountain Co, IN marriages also recorded the marriage of a Ruth Bolton to Caleb Leatherman in 1842, but she is not likely a daughter of David & Barbara. In a suit of 1858 in Darke Co, OH, Ruth Leatherman is named with Caleb Leatherman and (siblings?) Henry Boltin, Mary Brown, Henry Brown, Phillip Boltin, Isaac Boltin, William Boltin & Morrison Boltin

Additional research is needed, particularly on the Fountain Co, IN connection. The deed books for Fountain Co, which may indicate when Gideon and other Boltons first arrived, are not publicly viewable on Family Search.
