Mary Fridley
F, #7131, b. say 1770, d. before Jun 1816
Father | George Fridley b. 28 Aug 1731, d. 1814 |
Mother | Margaret |
Research Note* | The Family of Thomas Sickles & Mary Fridley Mary Fridley was named as a daughter of George Fridley in a deed of George Sickles on 8 June 1816 in which she is named as the deceased heir of an undivided 1/11th of the land of George Fridley, deceased. Her marriage to Thomas Sickles occurred in 1789, when William Kiser, her brother-in-law, acted as bondsman. Her birth year is unknown, but estimated to be around 1770. The family has not been found in the 1810 census and no further information on her husband Thomas Sickles is known. The 1816 deed noted that Mary left three children, but only 2 of them have been identified to date. A search of the remaining deeds of Rockingham Co did not find one noting the sale of the final 1/3rd portion of the 1/11th portion each was due after their mother's decease, as had been the case with both George and Benjamin. In a deed dated 2 December 1819, George Haga and Peggy his wife sold 114 acres to Abraham Step, "with a reserve of one third part of the eleventh part of sd tracts which said Haga holds no claim to", lying on Mountain Run and part of the original George Fridley lands. This entry may indicate that Thomas and Mary's third child had not yet sold their portion. Both George and Benjamin Sickles left Rockingham Co for Pickaway Co, OH after the sale of the Rockingham Co land, where their uncle Lewis Fridley had migrated around 1805. They were married there in 1816 and 1819, respectively.

"Whereas the said Mary Sickel deceased late Mary Fridley as aforesaid departed this life leaving three children of whom the above named George is one) who was entitled to the one undivided 11th part of one hundred and thirty eight acres of land lying and being in the said County of Rockingham on Smiths Creek which the said George Fridley died seized and possessed of and he having died intestate the said land decended unto his children and grandchildren then lving, and by the death of the said Mary Sickel the mother of the said George all her right and title of and in the said land decended to her three children aforesaid, each of whom is entitled to one third part of the said undivided one eleventh part".2 |

Catherine 'Caty' Fridley
F, #7132, b. circa 1782
Father | George Fridley b. 28 Aug 1731, d. 1814 |
Mother | Margaret |
Research Note* | The Family of Adam Losh and Catherine Fridley The family of Adam Losh and Catherine 'Caty' Fridley is not documented, but census, land, and court records provide strong clues to the identities of their children. Adam and Catherine were married in 1806 in Rockingham Co, with consent provided by Catherine's father George Fridley, Sr, and with witnesses John Fridley and George Fridley Jr, her brothers. The family was in Rockingham Co. for the 1810 census, when the household contained 3 males below the age of 10 along with Adam and Catherine. Only 2 of those males have been tentatively identified. The personal property tax list of Rockingham Co. listed Adam Losh through 1818, after which he disappears. It is not known where the family went as no census record of them has been found for 1820. By 1830, the family is living in Knox Co, OH with 2 adults (Adam and Catherine) along with 2 younger males and 4 younger females, but Adam and Catherine were not found in the 1840 census. Both can be found in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Adam likely died in 1863: In November 1862, he and Catherine were noted as living, but in an December 1863 deed, the house was noted as being where "Adam Losh formerly resided." Given his age, this does not likely refer to a move. It is not known when Catherine died or if she were living by the time of the December 1863 deed, but she likely died around the same time. The identification of Adam and Catherine's children relies strongly on a Knox Co, OH court record from 1835. In this record (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3QF-Q3NG Common Pleas Court case file, Knox Co, OH Court records 1834-1837), Adam Hart sued Adam Losh (Jr) over a $35 debt. For the trial, Adam Losh subpoenaed, among others, Thomas Losh, Eli Losh, Druscilla Losh, Delila Losh, and Eliza Ann Losh. Adam lost the trial and was ordered to pay $2.70 plus court costs, but his list of witnesses provides proof of a relationship with the named Loshes, and it is assumed here that they are all his siblings. Further research into each provides dates and birthplaces (VA) consistent with earlier censuses records; only in the case of Eli Losh does there appear to be a conflict with his birthyear and the age categories in the 1830 census. Questions remain on the identity of Angeline Losh, who was enumerated in the 1850 census with Adam and Catherine, age 22, b. OH. Some online trees assume she is a daughter, though there is no female in the appropriate age category in the 1830 census. A note on FamilySearch by made by Stephen W. Sorenson, a descendant of Angeline's noted: "Family tradition says that Angeline is the source of our Indian ancestry. The story goes that she, as a baby, was a lone survivor of an Indian massacre where her entire family were killed. The Losh family found the baby and adopted her after their family had grown. As you can see from the her picture shows that she is dark complected. if you look at the picture of her daughter, Emeranda, my great grandmother, she looks very much like an American Indian with high cheek bones. The child was given an adopted name of Angeline Losh, that is shown on her marriage record and 1850 census record." (https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/memories/GD56-DLJ) It is assumed here that Angeline was not a child of Adam and Catherine's. In 1853 in Knox Co, OH, she married Andrew Fansler, who is a Losh descendant from an uncle of Adam Losh. Another person often appearing in online trees as a child, but without documentation, is Joseph Zephaniah Losh (1822-1896), whose census records shows his birth in OH, and who married Jinetta Jane Kyle in 1845 in Hancock Co, OH, about 100 miles NW of Knox Co, OH. No records tie Joseph to the Knox Co, OH Losh family. By 1850, Joseph was living in Pioneer Twp, Cedar Co, IA, having arrived c 1846 since his daughter Cynthia A. was born in IA in 1846. In 1860, Joseph had relocated to Macedonia Twp, Pottawattamie Co, IA, on the western border across from Omaha, NE, where he worked as a miller. He remained there for the rest of his life and is buried at Carson, Pottawattamie Co, IA. In the 1880 census, however, Joseph noted that his father was born in Virginia and his mother in West Virginia. This suggests he could be a descendant of one of the Rockingham Co, VA Loshes who moved west into West Virginia (Tucker Co) before moving on to Ohio. Interestingly, in 1870 both Eli Losh and Angeline Losh Fansler were living in adjacent properties in Center Twp, Pottawattamie Co, IA, northeast of Macedonia Twp. Angeline was already widowed in 1870, and the birthplace of her son William, age 16, in OH and daughter Esmeranda, age 13, in IA suggests she had arrived in Iowa between 1854 and 1857. Eli Losh and wife Nancy have not been found in the 1860 census (but were likely in Knox Co, OH where they are recorded in land transactions), but in 1870 they were living alone in Pottawattamie Co, IA, with Eli noted as being blind. They lived in Center Twp in 1880, with Eli listing his father as being born in PA and mother in VA. In 1885, both were living in the country poor farm in Garner Twp outside Council Bluffs. No further record of them has been found. Though the geographical proximity of Eli and Angeline to Joseph could indicate a family relationship, other evidence suggests that he is not a son of Adam and Catherine and may well be a cousin.

Margaret Fridley
F, #7133, b. say 1772, d. circa 1830
Father | George Fridley b. 28 Aug 1731, d. 1814 |
Mother | Margaret |
Research Note* | The Family of George Haga and Margaret Fridley In the marriage record of Margaret Fridley to George Haga, consent was given by George Fridley, with bondsman, George Fridley, Jr, her brother. George and Margaret's family is partially documented: daughter Margaret was named as daughter of George at her marriage to Lewis Garner, and son Silas was named as son of George and Margaret in his death record in 1856. Margaret, Catherine and Mary all are ancestors of DNA matches of 3rd-great grandchildren. David, John, and Silas are consistently listed on the personal property tax lists on the same day as George Haga, while John Haga was named as living on a tract of land George owned that he sold in 1832. Hannah is otherwise undocumented, but was found living next to Cynthia and John in the 1850 census. Most of the Hagas remained in Rockingham Co, but son David moved to Washington Co, TN between 1850 and 1860, and Mary Haga Stepp later moved to Washington Co, TN to be with her children after her husband died in 1855. Hannah Haga Frazier moved to Greene Co, TN, neighboring Washington Co, also before 1860. Daughter Cynthia Haga Fawcett, who was widowed in 1837, left Rockingham Co with her daughter Cynthia for Montgomery Co, MD, between 1860 and 1870. It is inferred that Margaret Fridley died in 1830, as she appeared as grantor with husband George in a deed dated 25 December 1829, but no female of her age range appeared in the household of George Haga in the 1830 census. George lived another decade: he appeared in the personal property tax list of 14 April 1840, but did not appear (nor was there a male listed of his age range in the households of his children) in the 1840 census, typically enumerated after June, thus suggesting that George had died.

Charity Fridley
F, #7135, b. say 1768, d. before 1820
Father | George Fridley b. 28 Aug 1731, d. 1814 |
Mother | Margaret |
Research Note* | The Family of William Kiser & Charity Fridley Charity Fridley is named as the daughter of George Fridley in her marriage bond in Rockingham Co. in 1786 for her marriage to William Kiser, son of Henry Kiser. Henry Kiser was a close neighbor of George Fridley based on the unsorted personal property tax lists for Rockingham Co that lists them on the same date. William appears in the 1787 tax list in the same militia company as Henry Kiser and Isaac Kiser (brother). In 1806, William Kiser and wife Charity (and his siblings and wives) are listed as grantors in a deed selling William's share of the property of Henry Kiser as "heirs and representatives of Henry Kiser deceased." By 1810, the family had relocated to Botetourt Co, where they are found in the 1810 census with one inferred son (Isaac) and one inferred daughter (Margaret). Daughter Hannah had already married in 1808 in Botetourt Co, so William and Charity may have relocated there after the sale of their share of Henry Kiser's land in 1806. William and Charity were still living in Botetourt Co in 1816 when they sold their undivided 1/11th share of George's land in Rockingham Co to George Haga (Charity's brother-in-law). This sale may mark the time at which William and Charity left Botetourt Co for Ross Co, OH, as their daughter Margaret was married in Ross Co. in 1818 to James Wakeman. By 1820, only William was listed in the 1820 Ross Co, OH census with no other persons in the household, suggesting that Charity had died by then. The only evidence of William and Charity's children is found in the will of William Kiser written 22 May 1824 in Ross Co, OH, in which he leaves his estate to his "wife Elizabeth," son Isaac, daughter Hannah Bean "late Hannah Kiser", and the heirs of Margaret Wakeman, "late Margaret Kiser". Hannah's marriage bond in Botetourt Co, VA in 1808 listed her as "Hannah Kayser, daughter of William Kayser," proving that William Kiser in Ross Co, OH is the same as the William Kiser found in Rockingham and Botetourt Cos. Hannah's family largely stayed in Botetourt Co, while Isaac relocated to Ross Co. along with his parents (or William and Charity went with Isaac). It is currently unknown if daughter Margaret Kiser Wakeman had children before her death before 1824. Some online genealogies lists this William Kiser as "William Taylor Kiser" and his wife (and mother of children) as Elizabeth Motter (or Hannah Elizabeth Motter). This may have been an attempt to identify the Elizabeth named in William Kiser's will. However, William Taylor Kiser was born much later (1846) and died in 1914, in Miami Co, OH, about 100 miles northwest of Ross Co, and was not married until after 1870. He was the son of Amos and Rosalia Kiser (b. OH) and grandson of John Kiser, b. 1778 in VA. William Kiser's wife Elizabeth was named administrator of his estate. Among the probate papers for Willam Kiser in Ross Co, one item noted "as the decedent died without issue by said Elizabeth, all the personal property was set apart to the widow less than 200$ worth" (https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/8801/records/1099511624653), proving that Elizabeth was a second wife of William's after the death of Charity. Elizabeth remarried to Samuel Malone on 1 March 1825 in Ross Co., OH.
