| Death* | 11 Sep 1938 | Malinda died on 11 Sep 1938 at Willow Bend, Monroe Co, WV, at age 84. Sunday evening, Sept. 11, 1938, just at sunset the beautiful life of Mrs. Harriet Melinda (Crews) Loudermilk came to a close at her home at Willow Bend. Mrs. Loudermilk had for several years been a patient sufferer from a complication of diseases but the immediate cause of her death was hyperstatic pneumonia. She was born near Rock Camp on Jan. 6, 1854, a daughter of the late Thomas D. and Eveline Alderson Crews, and spent her entire life in Monroe County. Early in life she accepted Christ and united with the Baptist Church and through her life exemplified the finest traits of Christian character. Her unselfishness was very marked for she was never happier than when doing for others, and to know her was to love her. She was united in marriage to Mr. N. W. Loudermilk and with him establish the home of beauty and hospitality, one to which friends and relatives love to come and always found the smile of welcome. Mr. Loudermilk preceded her in death 15 years ago. During her years of illness Mrs. Loudermilk was tenderly cared for by her children, her daughter Miss Bernice Loudermilk, who remained in the home with her mother, and administering to her every need. Surviving are the following children: Miss Effie Loudermilk of Bluefield, Mrs. E. Don Ballard and Mrs. G. C. Mitchell of Union, Mrs. A. C. Crotty of Roanoke, Miss Bernice Loudermilk and Mr. Roberts W. Loudermilk of Willow Bend, all of whom were with her during her last illness. She also leaves a sister, Miss Betty Crews of Willow Bend, and five grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. J. E. McDonald, pastor of the Union M. E. Church, South, and Rev. T. E. Peters, Baptist minister of Bluefield. Her body was then laid to rest in Green Hill Cemetery at Union. Pallbearers were six of Mrs. Loudermilk's nephews: Messrs. J. P. and Cary C. Campbell, C. E. and J. E. Loudermilk, W. C. Hank and G. M. Calloway. The many floral pieces attested to the love and esteem in which the deceased was held by her large circle of relatives and friends.3,5 |

| Biography* | | JOSEPH A. HUFFMAN
Today we pay a tribute of love and respect to the memory of a gentleman whom we held in high esteem; and from our first acquaintance love and respected. Joseph A. Huffman of the "Wilderness" was born in Greenbrier county. I presume near the residence of Mr. E. E. Huffman on Muddy Creek, Jan. 10, 1824.
On the 18th day of April 1847, he was married to Miss Jane Alderson, which union lasted almost forty-eight years, until God seen fit to call Bro. Huffman up higher. The result of this union was ten children, two boys and eight girls. Two of the girls having "gone before" only eight children survive him. In the fall of 1850 he moved to Nicholas County, I presume to the old homestead in "the Wilderness" where he lived for almost forty five years. He was a useful, honest and honorable citizen. In home, church and state he filled his station well. For eight years he held the office of Deputy Assessor of Nicholas County. He accepted Christ as his savior in the year 1867. The Missionary Baptist Church being his choice, he at once gave himself and his influence to the "Army of the Living God." He was not always a private. He filled the responsible office of Deacon and Clerk of his church with honor to himself and acceptability to his Brethren.
His home was readily opened for the entertainment of Ministers of Christ. It was a pleasure to share his hospitality and hear him tell his joys and triumphs. It was an interesting scene; as the counsel of God was declared from the Sacred Desk, to watch the expression of his beaming face; to hear him plead with God in congregational Prayer, and to listen to his rich Christian experience and admonition. He truly loved the house of God, and when unable to ride, because of Rheumatism, with which he was afflicted for some five years, he would walk to church a mile or more when many wondered how Bro. Huffman got there.
Most of all of his children are explary christians [sic] and church members, and those who are not have the conviction that they should be. This last sentence is worthy of remark. [ here Martha made a small mark with a pencil]
I often think what a pity good people grow old. Yet the burden of almost seventy one years, mostly of toil, taking down the forest and making "The Wilderness" blossom as the rose, left its impress on his physical constitution, and for five years he often suffered sorely. For six months he was confined to his bed. As Paul admonished, he was truly "Patient in tribulation, rejoicing in hope, continuing instant in prayer." He seemed at all time during his last sickness to be "sweetly trusting in Jesus" Shortly before his demise he told his friends, "That all is well. There is nothing in my way." Thus he died, so far as mortality could see, trusting in the worlds Redeemer.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L.J. Huffman on April 5th at 2 o’clock, and all that was mortal of Bro. Huffman was laid to rest in the family burying ground in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relations.
I think on the resurrection morn, that old decrepit, crippled body will come forth to newess of life with eyes aglow and form erect and suple; be admitted to the Angelic and blood washed throng to live in perpetual youth through the countless ages.
To wife, children and friends, I would say, Flow on, "where the wicked cease from troubles and the weary are at rest."
Written by C.N. Coffman, Hominy Falls, W.Va. April 29, 1895. |

| Biography* | | IN MEMORIAM
George Robinson Huffman, eldest member of the family of Joseph A. Huffman, deceased and Jennie Huffman, was born in Greenbrier county, now West Virginia, July 31, 1848, departed this life at his home at Mr. Nebo, in Nicholas county, Sunday, January 26, 1913 aged 64 years, 5 months, and 26 days, after an illness from la grippe of 21 days duration.
On August 18, 1881 the subject of this sketch was united in marriage to Miss Margaret J. Fitzwater; to this union were born 8 children, 7 of whom survive him, viz: Miss Amy, Mrs. Jesse Odell, Mrs Boling Wiseman, Miss Lizzie, Mrs Lonnie Kincaid, Miss Florence and Oscar Hines.
During the Civil War, when the decendent was but a boy, domestic responsibilities fell heavily upon him on account of the unavoidable absence from the family of his father. Yet, young as he was, his mother and young sister found in him those noble taits of character which so tenaciously clung to him though life—the inherent qualities which characterized him as an obedient son and true and public spirited citizen.
His aged and decrepit mother, whose fragile life bark is, according to nature, almost foundered, has, especially during her widowhood, leaned heavily on him for succor.
Many years ago he was converted, baptized and united with the Baptist church and, we are informed, his membership was retained to his death in the state of Missouri where he spent several years of his life.
In his home he was a devoted and affectionate husband; a tender, compassionate father; an obliging neighbor, and to all generous hearted. He had an unusual interest in young folks, which was warmly reciprocated, and socially he never grew old.
His mental endowments were above the average and he posessed a fund of knowledge, both of profane and sacred history; possessing a peculiar gift of communication. His life was one of honest toil and beautifully exemplified the divine injunction: "In the sweat of the face shalt thou eat bread till thou return unto the ground." His afflictions were bourne with patience and his last words furnish hope to his family and friends of his future well being. He peacefully and almost without a tremor yielded to the king of terrors—Death.
Funeral services were conducted at Fowler Knob Church after which interment was made in the Hill cemetery nearby. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereft family in these their saddest hours. A FRIEND. |

Martha Jane's parents were probably in Nicholas by 1853, when her grandfather John "River Jack" Alderson died and bequest an unpaid note from Joseph A. Huffman on his property in Nicholas to his children, including Martha Jane's mother Jane Alderson Huffman.
