ANSTED — Robert Otho Dempsey, 91, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at his residence following a long illness.
Mr. Dempsey was born March 19, 1916, at Ansted, a son of the late Roy Houston and Nocha Rona Dempsey.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Claudis Cathleen Dempsey; four brothers and a sister, Ralph, Raleigh Raymond, Roscoe and Verda McGraw.
He was a charter member of Evergreen Baptist Church, Romont, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. A member of Ansted Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, he was a coal miner for 37 years, retired from Hawks Nest Mining Co., a member of UMWA and a timberman for Webster Hardwood.
He is survived by his children and their husbands, Rona Ethel and Thomas Fields I of Daniels, Reva Macil and James Lively of Powhatan, Va., Ruth Arbutus and Butch Skaggs of Ansted, and Pamela Louise and Randy Miles of Midlothian, Va; 12 grandchildren, Thomas Lee Fields II of Midlothian, Deborah Gale Cantley of Cool Ridge, Juanieta Catherine Richmond of Beaver, Sherill Lane Hanshew of Cumberland, Va., Wanda Marie Tabor of Cumberland, Robert Vernon Hanshew of Powhatan, Ruth Ann Church of Newport, Mich., Gregory Paul Skaggs of Ansted, Robert Douglas Skaggs of Lincoln Park, Mich., Cathy Lyn Demitroff of Brownstown, Mich., Michelle Miles Hammer of Midlothian and Randall Lynn “R.J.” Miles Jr. of Richmond, Va; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Rufus Jackson Dempsey; many loving nieces and nephews of the Dempsey family and many loving members of the Sorrell family.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ansted Baptist Church with the Rev. Garry Sorrell Jr. and Thomas Lee Fields II officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

FAYETTEVILLE — Rufus Jackson Dempsey, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2012, at his home, following a long illness.
Born September 15, 1923, at Vanette, WV, he was the son of the late Roy Houston and Nocho Rona Bragg Dempsey.
Mr. Dempsey was a World War II Army Veteran, and had retired from West Virginia Department of Highways. He was also a member of Salem Road Freewill Baptist Church of Gatewood, WV.
Survivors include his wife: Jane Martin Dempsey of Fayetteville, WV; one daughter: Brittany Dempsey, at home; one daughter-in-law: Juanita Blevins of Fayetteville, WV; four sons: Wayne Justice (Brooke) of Ramsey, WV, Brian Dempsey (Patricia) of Princeton, WV, Mark Dempsey (Glenna) of Beckley, WV, Bradley Dempsey (Melissa) of Princeton, WV; two grandchildren: Brianna Blevins and Isaiah Sneed.
There will be graveside services at 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at Martin Family Cemetery, Victor, West Virginia, with Pastor Billy Gillman officiating. Friends may call from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Ansted.

He was born at Thurmond, WV, on 10/23/1913. He was a retired insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance and was a member of Beaver United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Allen Bragg; daughter Sandra Boland of Beckley; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Doug Wilcox of Shady Spring; four grandchildren, Steven Williams and wife Shawn of Bluefield, Cindy Hungate and fiancé Jim Williams of Beckley, Mark Boland of Beckley, and Susan Fitzpatrick and husband Ken of Bowling Green, KY; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home today, Oct. 28, from 6 until 8 p.m.
A celebration of his life will be held at Beaver United Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, at 2 p.m., officiated by Rev. Betty Lusk.

Born on September 23, 1911, at Harvey, WV, Rosie was the daughter of the late George and Minnie Weikle Ballard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Clarence E. Bragg of DeWitt, and her brother Richard Ballard.
She attended Calvary Baptist Church, Oak Hill. She was a homemaker who loved to can, work in her flower garden, and visit with friends. She loved coffee, chewing gum, and ice cream. She met everyone with a smile, and she brought joy to her family and friends. She never met a stranger. She will be greatly missed by many people.
Survivors include her children, Bettie Wriston of Mossy, June Davis of Thurmond Road, Shirley Gibson of Gatewood, Eddie Bragg of Thurmond Road; one sister, Daisy Taylor of Lochgelly. Her ten grandchildren include Lee Wriston, Sharon Cook, Ricky Davis, Judy Persinger, Larry Vassil, Sandy Vassil, Hackney Gibson, Keith Bragg, Patrick Bragg, and Steven Bragg.
She had eleven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25801.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel in Oak Hill with the Rev. David Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday.
Family will serve as pallbearers.

Harold Delano Bragg , 77, of Glen Jean, WV died on Saturday, May 05, 2012 at CAMC - Memorial Division in Charleston, WV from a heart attack. Born August 13, 1934 at Thurmond, WV he was the son of the late Arlie S. and Margaret Muir Bragg. Mr. Bragg was a US Army veteran having served twenty five years before retiring with the rank of sergeant major. He was also retired from the US Postal Service in Mount Hope. Survivors include his wife, Elsa Ann DellaMea Bragg, one son, Michael Bragg of Glen Jean, a daughter, Ann Bragg Gerard and husband, Anthony of Oak Hill and a sister, Patricia Manuel and husband, Phillip of Indianapolis, IN. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews, especially Connie Bragg who was such a great help to him. Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
