Biography* | 1899 | "Reuben B. Carder, born 1854 at Philippi, son of Noah and Tabitha (Bennett) Carder, was married September 28, 1885, at Philippi, to Mary A., daughter of Daniel and Rachel (May) Fridley. Children, Albert M. and Danah. He is a Democrat, a farmer and 'a stockraiser, living four miles south of Philippi on the Fairmont and Beverly Pike, where he owns 450 acres, mostly improved, and all underlaid with coal. In 1898 he handled 800 sheep in addition to his agricultural business. Mrs. Carder is the possessor of an elegant set of glass dishes brought from Ireland by her great-great-grandfather, whose name was Nicely. Noah Carder, father of the subject of this sketch, introduced the first mowing machine into Barbour County. He was one of the most progressive farmers of his time. The family is of German origin, coming to Virginia in 1740, and his immediate ancestors settling near Philippi early in the present century."5 |
