Marriage* | 14 Jun 1952 | David Bibb Fischbach married Patricia Cunningham on 14 Jun 1952 at Janesville, Rock Co, WI.3 |
Death* | 26 Feb 2013 | David died on 26 Feb 2013 at Bellevue, King Co, WA, at age 86. David Bibb Fischbach, an expert on the nature and properties of carbon and graphite, and professor emeritus of materials science at the University of Washington, died at home in Bellevue on February 26, 2013, with family at his side. He was 86, and had been in declining health. Despite the chaotic appearance of his desktop, Dave was a meticulous note taker and research scientist. As an academic adviser and associate editor and reviewer of scientific papers submitted to Carbon, the international journal of the American Carbon Society, he was an exacting critic, alert to flaws of logic and methodology in his own work as well as that of others. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Denison University with degrees in math and physics in 1950, then went on to earn his Ph.D. in physics and metallurgy from Yale in 1955. That year, he joined the Materials Science Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech, Pasadena, initially performing high temperature and internal friction experiments with alloys of iron and aluminum for application to rocket nozzles and, later, testing the mechanical properties of graphite. After the program was discontinued, a research exchange with the University of Wales in 1968 offered him the chance to move his family to Swansea for a year of work, travel, and cultural adventure. In 1969, he was named a research associate professor of ceramics in what was then the Department of Mining, Metallurgy, and Ceramic Engineering at UW, rising through the ranks to full professor in 1987 in Materials Science & Engineering. He was elected Fellow of the American Ceramic Society in 1991. Fischbach was born October 28, 1926, in Beckley, West Virginia, son of the Reverend Julius and Mildred Fischbach, and spent his early childhood in Morgantown. In 1935, the family moved to Lansing, Michigan, where he attended Sexton High School. In fall 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After completing electronics technician training, he was assigned shipboard as a radar technician, posted in the Azores off the coast of Portugal. He served for two years. Dave met his future wife, Patricia Cunningham, at a Baptist youth camp in the summer of 1947. They kept in touch intermittently by post, and four years later a road trip offered the chance to see each other again. They hit it off, and married on June 14, 1952, in Janesville, Wisconsin. Following his retirement from UW in 1992, he and Pat traveled widely and often. A pragmatist, humanist, and empiricist who enjoyed theater, dance, classical music, and jazz, Dave was respected by colleagues and friends for his intelligence, lack of artifice, and quiet good humor. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Mary Ellen Heater, daughters Elizabeth Fischbach (partner Judy Adams) and Catherine Farrey (husband Edward), and grandchildren Elizabeth Jette (husband Levi) and John Farrey. A memorial gathering is being planned for later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to organizations working to promote education and alleviate hunger, inequality, and injustice.3,5,4 |

Death* | 22 Mar 2016 | Patricia died on 22 Mar 2016 at Bellevue, King Co, WA, at age 89. Patricia C. Fischbach, Midwest native, California transplant, and a longtime resident of Bellevue, Washington, died March 22, 2016 with family at her side. She was 89 and had been in declining health for several years attributable to dementia. Energetic, adventurous, feisty, and pragmatic, Pat was an active member of the University of Washington community, where she volunteered at the escort desk of the UW hospital for more than 20 years and served as president of the Faculty Auxiliary (1975) and on the board of FIUTS, the Foundation for International Understanding Through Students. She hiked with the Tuesday hikers, sang with various choral groups, and relished participation in the international dining group. She was a longtime member of AAUW, and served as president of the Stanford Mothers' Club Pacific NW chapter in the late 1970s. Her husband of more than 60 years, UW Professor of Materials Science and Engineering David B. Fischbach, died in 2013. Pat was born August 2, 1926 in Janesville, Wisconsin, the second of three children of Rachel and Robert Cunningham, Janesville city attorney. She grew up in a multigenerational household. In 1944 her older brother, US Army Air Forces pilot John Cunningham, was lost over the Pacific. That same year, she enrolled in the University of Wisconsin, Madison, earning a BA in Home Economics in 1948. She worked in the test kitchens of the Monarch Range Company and taught high school in Green Bay, WI, and New Haven, CT. She and Dave met at a Baptist youth camp in 1947; they married in 1952. Daughter Catherine (Katie) was born in New Haven, where Dave was pursuing a Yale graduate degree in physics. His subsequent employment at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory/Cal Tech in Pasadena prompted the young family's move to Southern California, where daughter Elizabeth (Becky) was born. From the early 1950s through the mid-1970s Pat devoted herself full time to motherhood and household management, raising her daughters with a firm hand, unconditional love, irreverent songs, and a healthful no-added-sugar diet. She was a stickler for correct usage; the double negative was an infraction up with which she would not put. She was an impulsive perfectionist, an accomplished seamstress who nevertheless managed to design and sew herself out of a jumpsuit. She won a recipe contest for a pie she hadn't baked in decades, then had to produce the perfect pie for the press. Family adventures included tent-camping vacations at the beach, Girl Scout outings, and backpacking in the Sierra. Largely due to Pat's encouragement, Dave accepted a research exchange at the University of Wales in 1968 and the family spent a year living in Swansea and traveling throughout the British Isles and Western Europe in a VW van. Dave was hired at the UW in 1969, commencing the Pacific Northwest chapter of their lives together. Pat was passionate about education and the value of cross-cultural exchange, serving as FIUTS host family for grad students arriving at the UW from all over the world. Once fond of saying that she "kept her suitcase packed and by the door," she later recanted, saying that if an opportunity for travel arose she would happily go without a bag. In 1992 Dave retired from teaching and research, and Pat from volunteer work. They travelled widely, enjoyed time with grandchildren at their cabin on Camano Island, and remained active for as long as possible as age and its inconveniences encroached. "Bag packed and by the door" gave way to Pat's frequent declaration, "We try not to let our infirmities interfere with our fun!" Her love of travel and interest in other cultures led to numerous longtime international friendships. Pat is remembered for her get-up-and-go, generosity, and penchant for smart remarks. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Fischbach (spouse Judy Adams) and Catherine Farrey (spouse Edward), grandchildren John Farrey and Elizabeth Farrey Jette (spouse Levi), and great grandson Lincoln Francis Jette. No public memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions to the Patricia C. Fischbach Scholarship Fund at the University of Washington.2 |

Born in Beckley, West Virginia to Clarence and Ruth Bibb on September 12, 1942, Kenny spent his youth there until leaving for college where he earned his Accounting degree at Western Kentucky University. His 36-year career at Exxon Mobil led him into various positions across the company including many international assignments, before his retirement in 2000. Although a dedicated career professional, Ken held his daughters, and their softball, at the highest of his priorities, coaching their teams for a decade and a half, filling their game room with dozens of tournament championship trophies. Always the last to leave the game table, he loved playing dominos, cards or whatever his family and friends wanted to play, and always volunteered to keep score. Hmmm, makes us wonder why he always won! Ken was a faithful member of Community Bible Church and to say that he "loved watching his grandkids play sports" would be the understatement of the century. At the Pearly Gates of Glory he was gladly greeted by his parents, Clarence and Ruth Bibb, and daughter Tania Thompson. Ken finished his race ahead of his family members: Brother Steve Bibb; Daughter Kim Hornsby and her husband John, Daughter Jennifer Losh and her husband Jeff, Grandchildren Tasha and her husband David and their family, Hank and his wife Katy and their daughter who will arrive in April, Anthony and his wife Samantha, Danielle, Hannah and her fiancé Raustin, Macie, and Sydney and niece Stephanie Fagan and her husband Kevin and their family.3 |
Burial* | 20 Nov 2016 | His body was interred on 20 Nov 2016 at Selma, Bexar Co, TX, at Mission Park Retama Cem.3 |
