Roy Gordon Fridley
M, #1, b. 20 Jun 1900, d. 3 Mar 1987
Birth* | 20 Jun 1900 | Roy was born at Potts Creek, Alleghany Co, VA, on 20 Jun 1900. Roy's date of birth was unknown. His family was enumerated in the census of 1900 on June 28th, but he was not listed, though census rules excluded those born after the official enumeration date. He later chose the date June 20th because it was the date of WV statehood.
Roy said that he was born in Fire Creek, Fayette Co., WV, where his mother died shortly after his birth. The 1920 census notes that he was born in WV. Perhaps he was born later in 1900 and his family had left Alleghany Co. after the enumeration on 28 June? After the death of his mother, Roy was raised by his aunt Susan Tingler Bowyer.. |

William Bess
M, #28, b. circa 1776
Biography* | | Family of William and Rebecca (Hamilton) Bess.
1. William Bess was born in Virginia in 1776, probably in Botetourt County. Although his parentage is unknown, he is likely descended from the Bess families who were residing in Augusta County as early as 1764. (Botetourt was created from Augusta in 1769.) The family is probably of German origin, and they probably came to the Shenandoah Valley from Pennsylvania, as did thousands of other German immigrants. Nothing is known of William's early life or of his siblings. He married, on 25 April 1799 in Botetourt County, Rebecca Hamilton, daughter of William and Elizabeth Hamilton. In 1810, William and Rebecca were living in Rich Patch, Botetourt County, now located in Alleghany County. Among other early settlers of Rich Patch were the Fridleys, who moved there from Rockingham County. In the Botetourt County census of 1820, William and Rebecca are listed with 9 children, only six of which have been identified:
11 m Bess, b. 1799-1804 12 Hamilton Bess, b. ca. 1802 13 Henry Bess, b. ca. 1805 14 Jane Bess b. ca. 1808 15 f Bess b. 1804-10 16 William Bess b. ca. 1814 17 m Bess b. 1810-15 18 Nash L. Bess b. 1819 19 John Bess b. ca. 1820
In William and Rebecca's household in 1850 was Frances Bess, born 1834, but her relationship to William and Rebecca is unclear. The census indicated that William was a shoemaker by profession.
There is no further record of William and Rebecca after 1850. |
Birth* | circa 1776 | William was born at VA circa 1776. |
| | He was the son of Christopher Bess and Mary (?) |
