NEWTON FALLS, Ohio — Mrs. Joy Armada Foster, 85, of Newton Falls, passed away at 1:48 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio, with her daughter by her side. Joy was born on Wednesday, October 17, 1923, in Green Sulphur Springs. She was the daughter of the late Charles Henry and Lura Hedrick Hicks. Joy grew up in Green Sulphur Springs with her 13 brothers and sisters where she graduated Valedictorian from Green Sulphur District High School at Sandstone. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Youngstown State University with a dual degree in elementary education and secondary business education. She taught school in the Labrae School District where she retired in 1981 after 33 years of teaching. Mrs. Foster was a Jennings Scholar. She was a member of the Sandstone Baptist Church, Retired Teacher Association of Trumbull County and Retired Teachers Association of Ohio. Joy also worked for the Department of Defense for two years during World War II. She loved flower gardening, fishing with her husband and most of all time spent with her granddaughter and great-granddaughters. Mrs. Foster’s memories will be carried on by her daughter and son-in-law Phoebe Jo and Lowell D. Smith of Newton Falls, Ohio. Her two sisters, Bonnie Sutton of Waynesville, N.C., and Devota Shumate of Madison, Ind. Her brother and sister-in-law Orlie and Uthalee Hicks of Lake Milton, Ohio. Her granddaughter Ms. Melissa Jo Reibestein of Newton Falls, and her two great-granddaughters Maria Jo and Melanie Joy Reibestein also of Newton Falls. Joy was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Foster, four brothers, Joseph, Claytus, Virgil and Clyde Hicks, two sisters, Grace Holland and Ova France, two half brothers, Boone and Byron Hicks, and two half sisters, Evaline Fox and Violet Miller. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastors Robert Rodes and Dennis E. Cales officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery at Sandstone. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral parlors.
