Biography* Benjamin Ammen

Naomi Cross was born 29 Mar 1810 in Botetourt Co., VA. She died 1 Nov 1886. She married Benjamin Ammen of Fincastle, VA. He was born 1800 and died 15 June 1867, the son of Michael and Catherine (Deardorf) Ammen. Michael was born in 1765 and died 17 April 1840 and married Catherine on 5 April 1791. Catherine was the daughter of Peter Deardorf.

Benjamin was the owner of Ammen's Mills in Fincastle, on Ammen's Run. (Thomas Cross owned Cross's mill in Fincastle when, in 1826, his son-in-law, Benjamin Ammen bought the property from him.) The Ammen Mill subsequently became famous for its patterns, woven into woolen blankets. At his death he left his mills to Michael T. Ammen, his sole surviving partner. Industrious, energetic and devoutly Christian, Benjmain Ammen accumulated considerable property by the time of his death. From an early age he displayed considerable mechanical ability. We are told he made barrels for his father when a very young boy, and that he had to stand on a stool to place the metal rings around the barrel he had just finished. At age 14 he made his father a shovel type plow. A millwright, he installed machinery for mill owners throughout the area: in Hershberger's Mill, Buford's Mill, Bonsack's Mill, Stairs Mill at Mill Creek, and the mill of Thomas Cross near Natural Bridge, where he met Naomi Cross who became his wife. Jolly, kind and a lively conversationalist, he was well liked in the community. His father, Michael Ammen, bought three families of slaves in 1806 or 1808, and it was said that they worked no harder than Michael Ammen's children. Benjamin Ammen fell on the ice at his mill and received a severe blow and died of paralysis on June 15, 1867. [from Helen Boswell, Moberly, MO. Biography* Samuel Zenas Ammen

Samuel Zenas Ammen, known as Kappa Alpha's practical founder, was born in Fincastle, Va., October 22, 1843. He was the youngest of nine children and at the age of eight he entered school. Later, he entered the Botetourt Male Academy where his academic standing was excellent. The Civil War, which was about to begin, delayed his entering college until 1866.
At the beginning of the war, Ammen joined a local military organization and the rank of second lieutenant in his company. At the time of his enlistment, he was stationed at Centreville, near Washington, In December, 1861, he was engaged in a skirmish at Dranesville, near the Potomac. His force was led by the colorful and daring General J.E.B. Stuart. After months of picket duty. Ammen's company was marched to Richmond, and thereafter transferred to the C.S.S.Schultz on the James River and proceeded towards Yorktown. The night before the battle of Williamsburg, where several of his companions were killed, he slept on the campus of The College of William and Mary. A month later, he was detailed as a chemist to assist in the preparation of dyestuffs needed in the manufacture of cloth for the army. He later was transferred to the Confederate Navy. Just before the end of the war he was transferred to Virginia's western front.

At the end of the war, Ammen returned to the Botetourt Military Male Academy in Fincastle and continued his studies. It was also during this time that he became involved in freemasonry. In the fall of 1866, he travelled north up the valley road to Lexington where he enrolled in Washington College to study under General Lee. He was now 22-years old - older than most of the boys in his class. During his first session, he boarded at the home of William Ruff, approximately a half mile from town. He lived subsequently at Ann Smith Academy, while teaching Latin and French there. On October 18th of his first year in college he was initiated into Alpha chapter of Kappa Alpha. From that day until his death he labored faithfully toward the development of the Order.

Shortly after his initiation he and Will Scott and James Wood began to rework the struggling fraternity's initiatory customs. By the end of the 1867 session a new set of customs was introduced. It was Ammen who carried on the work of its creation. He once wrote, "In the evolution of the customs and constitution nothing was borrowed from other fraternities, with respect to which the founders had very little knowledge. . ."

As a student at Washington College, Ammen became president of th Washington Literary Society - then one of the most coveted honors. He won a gold medal for the best essay in the School of English Literature. He was the founder of the Southern Collegian, a literary paper, and afterwards a magazine. In addition, he was a member of the Ugly Club and was Chief Mourner at the Burial of Queen Math - both being honors of distinction during his time in college. In June 1969 he graduated with a master's degree in arts. He immediately became master in the Milburn Academy in Kentucky. He had turned down an assistant professorship in modern languages at Washington College.

The first day Ammen took this job, the principal of the school skipped town and young Ammen took over the principalship the next day with a raise in salary. He served in this capacity during the 1869-1870 academic year; it was during this same time period, with the consent of Alpha chapter, that he completed the first ritual and constitution an oversaw their printing.

From 1870 until 1881, he taught Latin, Greek, and chemistry at the Atkinson's School for Boys in Baltimore, Md. It was also during this time that he traveled extensively throughout Europe. In August 1881, Ammen became the literary editor of The Baltimore Sun. This move opened up the second stage of his professional career - that of journalist. He continued as an editorial writer on The Sun for the next thirty years.

WILL OF JOSEPH MIDDLECOFF

Page 369 Dated: Sept. 20, 1847

Proven: Oct. 4, 1848
H. Vance, D. Clk

In the Name of God, Amen. I Joseph Middlecoff being feeble in health but of disposing mind and memory do make & publish this my last Will and Testament. I give my body to be buried in a Christian-like manner at the discretion of my friends and my soul to return to God who gave it. Next, all my just debts to be paid. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Patsy all my property of every description, both real and personal for her comfortable support and the raising of my children so long as she shall remain my widow. It is my will that my son George have the tract of land which I purchased from Pleasant N. Lee [note: should be Gulley? Joseph's daughter Martha married Pleasant Nathaniel Gulley] and on which there is a saw mill. One-third of the saw mill is mine and the other George’s. I wish the land and my interest in the mill to be valued and the final division of my property for my son George to pay to my other heirs the valuation of said land, together with my interest in said mill. I wish the line of the said tract of land to commence on a hornbeam corner to my old tract of land and corner to the said tract I purchased from Lee, running thence in a north direction straight with the fence to the corner and for this line to be the dividing line between the two tracts of land. If my said wife should ever marry, which I do not expect she will, I wish my Estate to be divided between her and my children according to law. It is my will that my beloved wife Patsy should remain in the quiet and unmolested possession of all my property as before mentioned during her widowhood or her natural life and at her death I wish my property of every description both real and personal to be equally divided between my lawful heirs. It is my will that it be left to the choice of my son George whether he take the land and the mill as above mentioned. If he does not, I wish it to be disposed of as my other lands and for George’s interest in the mill being two-thirds to be valued and for George to be paid the valuation by the other heirs when a final division shall take place. I wish my son George to have entire control of the saw mill and to pay his mother one-third of the proceeds thereof until the final division takes place and I do hereby nominate and appoint my sons John Thomas and George Executors to this my last Will and Testament. This 20th day of September in the year of our Lord, one Thousand eight hundred and forty-seven.
