"Wash" Burdette "says he was in an upstairs room of his home packing his trunk and in placing his revolver therein, accidently let the weapon fall in such a manner as to strike the side of the trunk, which caused it to go off, the ball entering just behind the right ear came out the back of his head. Medical assistance was immediately secured, but those in attendance readily saw the seriousness of the wound and from the first little hope was expressed for his recovery".4
