Survivors include his wife, Ruby Bruno Dooley; three sons, Kenneth Dooley of Grovetown, Ga., and Jerry and William Dooley, both of Oak Hill; three daughters, Betty Castleman of Grand Rapids, Mich., Karen Lefevers of Huntsville, Ala., and Sherry Painter of Oak Hill; a step-son, Raymond Butler of Oak Hill; two step-daughters Dorothy Owens of Lewisburg and Carol Perdue of Oak Hill; a sister, Almeda Stover of Oak Hill; 13 grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and 21 step great-grandchildren. Services were Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel in Oak Hill with the Revs. Joe Darlington and Bill Menefee officiating. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sebert Ray Stover, Sr. on Sept. 17, 1988; son, Sebert Ray “Toby” Stover Jr. on April 10, 2002; sister, Kathleen Johnson; and brothers, Arnold Oscar Dooley, Jerry Leon Dooley, George Lang Dooley, Robert Dooley and William R. Dooley Jr. Survivors include daughter, Janice McCoy of Minden; son, Darren Stover of Minden; two grandchildren, Sebert Ray Stover Jr. of Oak Hill and Jeffrey Harold Stover of Lynchburg, Va; and a great-granddaughter, Brittney Marie Stover of Tampa, Fla. BETHALTO, Ill. — Emmet James Coleman, 96, formerly of Oak Hill, went to his homecoming on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, Ill., with his daughter and son-in-law at his side. Born July 23, 1909 at Winifrede Junction, he was the son of the late J. Nathan and Elenor Mae Dooley Coleman. Mr. Coleman worked with the survey crew for the Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington Division, retiring in 1971. He served his country with the U.S. Army and was activated from the West Virginia National Guard for World War II and reactivated in 1962 for the Cuban Missile Crisis. Emmet was a member of Jones Avenue First Church of God, Oak Hill, the American Numismatic Association, National Scrip Collectors Association and enjoyed Civil War memorabilia. He loved West Virginia history, flea markets, yard sales and reading. He enjoyed his family very much and would always ask, “How are my girls?” when talking about his great-granddaughters. He married the former Lorene (Wilson) Coleman on Feb. 18, 1944, in Oak Hill, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 1992. A granddaughter, Amber Strawn, two sisters, Decima Coleman and Mary Pennock, and a brother, George “Jack” Coleman, preceded him in death. Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Coleman Strawn and husband, Bill, of Bethalto; a sister, Lula Thompson of Bradley; four grandchildren and their spouses, Charles Coleman and Carrie Strawn of Malibu, Calif., Timothy Emmet and Diane Strawn of Cahokia, Ill., Scott Willard and Cambra Strawn of San Jose, Calif., and Sara Suzanne Strawn of Alton, Ill; four great-grandchildren, Moriah, Jordan, Janae' and Will and was expecting his fifth great-grandchild; his pretend grandchildren, Rachel and Christopher Pennington; and a host of friends and church family. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1963 after 20 years of service and from the Virginia Employment Commission in 1987. He was a deacon and active member of Deer Park Baptist Church. He was also a member and past master of Warwick Masonic Lodge No. 336, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry and the Khedive Shrine Temple. He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Morgan Coleman; two daughters, Jeanne Covington of Gloucester and Donna Drew of Cumberland, R.I; one son, George L. Coleman Jr. of Gloucester; one sister, Lula Thompson of Bradley, W.Va; one brother, Emmitt Coleman of Oak Hill, W. Va; six grandchildren, Michelle Brown and George Coleman III, both of Gloucester, Deena Mariniak and Chris Covington, both of Newport News, and Tanya Rao and Jeffrey Yost, both of Cumberland, R.I; and four great-grandchildren, Michael Mariniak, Jacob Brown, Cheyenne Davis-Covington and Linzie Coleman. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at 3:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park with Masonic rites held by Warwick Lodge No. 336.3,1 |
