Ulta Alois Thomas Esken, 86, of Terre Haute passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, in Union Hospital. She was born Aug. 15, 1924, in Parke County, Ind., to Hubert A. Thomas and Jewell Irma Smiley Thomas. Ulta was a graduate of State High School in 1942. During World War II she served as a civilian government employee in Washington, D.C. Upon returning to Terre Haute, she was employed by General Telephone of Terre Haute for over 40 years and was the secretary to the Area Supply Field Supervisor the last 10 years. She married William Fillmore Esken on Oct. 16, 1948, in Terre Haute. They celebrated 55 years of marriage prior to his death in 2004. Ulta was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Terre Haute, having joined on Easter Sunday morning in 1935. She and her husband served as youth sponsors for many years. The Eskens were also long-time leaders in the Roger Williams College Fellowship of First Baptist Church. She served on the building committee to expand the educational space of the church in the mid-1990s. She helped to develop and maintain the historical archives for the church, but she and her husband are most noted for their faithful work as volunteer caretakers of the church facility for over 30 years. Additionally she was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Baptist Campus Ministry at Indiana State University. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, in First Baptist Church of Terre Haute, 4701 Poplar, with the Rev. Bernie Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be prior to services from noon until 1 p.m., in the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Endowment Fund.2,1,3 |

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Lawson, three brothers and five sisters. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Waddell and wife, Patricia, and Gary Derfun, all of Peterstown; two daughters, Nellie Grimmett and Vera Bennett and husband, P.J., all of Peterstown; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Born on Nov. 25, 1969, at Beckley, he was the son of Mildred Treadway Lewis of Lester and the late Melvin Cargyle Lewis. Melvie loved video games, watching TV, and reading. He had attended NIT at Cross Lanes. Previously he had worked at Kroger’s, Montgomery Ward, John W. Eye and in the warehouse at Sears. His father, Melvin C. Lewis, preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memory include his mother, Mildred Treadway Lewis of Lester; three sisters, Joyce (Kenneth) Carpenter, Donna Coughlin, and Patricia (Frank) Mason, all of Lester; two nieces, April (Greg) Mitchem and Kymber Mason; and five nephews, Michael, Zachary, and Daniel Carpenter, Ronnie Allen, and Tyler Mason. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2013, at his residence, 370 Sunburst Lane, Lester, WV 25865, with Rev. Brian McCallister officiating. Burial will follow at the Lewis Family Cemetery there at the home place. Friends may call at the home from noon to service time on the day of the service.
