Dr. Burdette attended the public schools, graduated from Hillsboro High School as salutatorian, and from Hill County Junior College as valedictorian. He received his A.B. from Baylor University and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Epsilon Delta. He received a scholarship to the University of Texas in Genetics, earning his A.M and Ph.D. He then received his M.D. from Yale University, where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and the Nathan Smith Club, and was on the editorial board of the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine. He trained in General and Thoracic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Yale New Haven Hospital, continued his interest in research, and assisted in the first clinical trials of penicillin. During Dr. Burdette's research and medical career, he held positions as Professor of Surgery at Louisiana State University, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Missouri, Professor of Clinical Surgery at St. Louis University School of Medicine, Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah, Professor of Surgery and Associate Director of Research at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas School of Medicine at Houston, and Head of the Department of Surgery at Park Plaza Hospital. He was invited as a visiting professor to universities around the world, including Oxford University, University of Congo, the Chester Beatty Institute for Cancer Research in London, England, and the Max Planck Institut Fuer Biochemie in Tuebingen, Germany. He was a consultant to Oak Ridge National Laboratories and received a Rockefeller Fellowship to travel to the former USSR and Eastern Europe during the Cold War. He was a charter member and chairman of the NIH Genetics Study Group and a member of the Surgeon General's National Advisory Cancer Council on Smoking and Health. He retired from active medical practice in 1991, devoted his time to writing, and published books on cancer treatment and genetics. Dr. Burdette's research interests extended from basic genetics to the etiology of cancer to surgical techniques for cancer treatment. He published eleven books and over 250 scientific articles on genetics, mathematics, and medicine. He felt that one of his major accomplishments was his participation in the Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health because it improved the health of so many people by establishing the link between smoking and cancer. In addition to his many academic accomplishments, Dr. Burdette had a lifelong interest in art, music, and travel. He was an avid art collector, played the piano and organ, and enjoyed attending classical music concerts and hosting musical soirees in his home. He was a supporter of the Houston Symphony for many years. He spoke French and German, traveled extensively, and circumnavigated the world on two occasions, adding many artifacts to his collection from his travels. Both before and after his retirement, he was an active member of the Yale Club of Houston, Association of Yale Alumni, Oxford Society of Houston, Houston World Affairs Council, American Guild of Organists, and Museum of Fine Arts Museum Collectors Group. He was an active member and elder at Bethany Christian Church. He was devoted to his family and friends, and inspired all who knew him with his knowledge, integrity, and wisdom. Dr. Burdette is survived by his daughter Susan Burdette Radoux and her husband Victor Radoux, son William James Burdette and friend Leigh Anderson, stepgranddaughter Catherine Bergeron-Radoux, and nieces Bettye Morgan and Martha Williams.
