Biography* MITCHELL: The first of this name settling in these parts was Thomas Mitchell and his wife Margaret ("Peggy" Snyder) Mitchell, natives of Floyd County, Virginia, who came direct here from there where the New River is not larger than Spring Creek, bringing with them their thirteen children: nine sons and four daughters, about the year 1845. They at once, or had, purchased a tract of one thousand acres situate on the divide between the Kanawhas, adjoining the lands of Uriah Gandee, lapping over on the Spring Creek side to where the crossroads village, Speed, now is, on State concrete Road no. 14. Here the Mitchell pioneer home was made within a few hundred yards of the Kanawha's watershed; and these lands kept as an inheritance for those same children, born in Floyd County, and their descendants. The names of the children are: 1, Henry; 2, James; 3, Samuel; 4, Granville; 5, William V; 6, George; 7, Charles; 8, Thomas Pride; 9, Susan; 10, Mary; 11, Nancy and 12, Margaret Elizabeth. The marriages and families of the foregoing as given us by Charles Mitchell, grandson of the pioneers, Thomas and "Peggy", he being a son of Thos. P. Mitchell, are as follows: Henry, first son married Mary Harmon; bought the Doty Tanyard in Spencer. See Ch. City of Spencer. To Henry and Mary (Harmon) Mitchell were born and reared near the Tanyard mentioned, three daughter and one son; their names: Mary, who married John "Pat" Murphy, who for many years was Spencer's best blacksmith, was a merchant a few years and died here. James M. Mitchell, son of Henry S., married Mary E. Crouse, of a good family of the name Crouse in Fayette County. James M. Mitchell became the owner and manager of the Tannery in Spencer. (Of this see the Chapter: City of Spencer.) To James M. and Mary E. (Crouse) Mitchell were born three sons and two daughters: Martin, now (1926) in the motion picture business in Detroit; Wallis; Minnie, a school teacher; Joseph and Ruth. Nancy (Nannie) Jane, daughter of Henry S. and Mary (Harmon) Mitchell, his first wife, married Charles C. Cleavenger, November 29, 1876. He was son of Bailey Cleavenger. (See that name, also the Chapter City of Spencer.) To Nancy Jane (Mitchell) and husband C. C. Cleavenger were born two sons and three daughters, as follows: Robert W., May, Bertha, Carrie (known as "Dock"), Nell and Mason. James, second son of Thomas Mitchell and Margaret (Snyder), married and remained in Virginia. Samuel, third son of Thomas and Margaret Mitchell, remained in Floyd County, Virginia, became a teacher of vocal music; during the war, 1861-5, went South and was never heard of afterward by the family here. Granville, fourth son of Thomas, remained in Virginia. William V., fifth son of Thomas Mitchell and Margaret, marrried Ellen Underwood in Floyd County, Virginia, came to Roane County about 1856, to his father's wide homestead. The names of children of William V. and Ellen (Underwood) his wife, are, first, Lizzie, who married John Huff, son of Mose (or Anthony) Huff of Jackson County. John and Lizzie, his wife, lived many years in Spencer, died here and left several children, among whom was a son, Albert. Robert, first son and second child of William V. never married. Charles Thomas Mitchell, second son and third child of William V. Mitchell, above mentioned, married Sophia Butcher, daughter of John Butcher of Spencer District on Ravenswood Turnpike.5

Marriage* He married Millie Wright
Residence*Jan 1787 George Boothe resided at Montgomery Co, VA, in Jan 1787.
Death*1813 George died in 1813 at Montgomery Co, VA.
Biography* Source Materials on George Boothe:
1. History of Floyd Co., VA, by Amos D. Wood, 1981, pp. 19-21. Wood presents the story of George's birth as a son of an English earl in 1745. His escape to America was due to the lifting of a cornerstone to a plot of land, a punishable offense. Wood mentions that George "often made the trip on horseback from his home in New York, bringing back many droves of horses, which he turned out on a 'range.' He lived in the present county of Floyd many years and is buried on the land he took up." Children as "Obediah, Isaac, and Daniel." Text seems fairly reliable, and appears annotated; bracketed information often contradicts or expands on other information.

Marriage*17 Dec 1826 He married Susannah Dozier at Greenbrier Co, VA, on 17 Dec 1826.
Biography* In 1835, William Hughart, of Greenbrier County, bought 306 acres on Wolf Pen Creek and Rattlesnake Spring Branch adjoining Daniel Dozier's property. The same year, he sold the place to Samuel Perkins and Adam Nicely, who lived there until the 1850s. The farm of Samuel Perkins lay between those of Nicely and Dozier. It became the central part of the Old Poor Farm forty years later. The tall log house which still stands there near where the old Bluestone Road (as well as the later Giles, Fayette and Kanawha Turnpike) crossed Wolf Creek, is on the Perkins farm. Margaret, daughter of Samuel and Susan Perkins and wife of George Rooks Huddleston, was born in this log building in 1837. Perkins kept a tavern there, and it was a stopping place for stagecoaches. The Perkins burial ground is on the low hill to the north of the tavern, while the Poor Farm cemetery is across the road to the west. [photo included]2 [L. Elias Perkins

M, #9842, b. circa 1758, d. 1843
Father_____ Perkins
Mother_____
Biography* Perkins Family

Elias Perkins first appears in the records of Greenbrier County, Virginia as the assignee of 60 acres of land along the Greenbrier River. This tract was originally entered by Joseph Maze in August 1782, but was later assigned to Elias, though the date is unknown. Eli appears in the compiled tax lists of Greenbrier County for the years 1783-1786, and is later recorded as entering three tracts for a total of 230 acres along the Greenbrier River near Anthony's Creek in January 1788. Eli probably came to Greenbrier County shortly after January 1782, when he finished an 18-month enrollment with the Army. Eli enlisted from Botetourt County, Virginia in June 1780, and was present at the battle of 96. He may have been a recipient of a land warrant in reward for his service, as was Abraham Dehart, who came to Greenbrier County (Monroe after 1799) later in the 1790s.

The 1783-1786 tax lists of Greenbrier County also record the payments of James Perkins, James Perkins, and Henry Perkins. A James Perkins is also listed in the land books as having entered land along the Greenbrier in 1783 and 1785. Henry Perkins first appears in the land records in 1790 as grantee of 37a of land in the Big Levels. The second James Perkins in the 1783-1786 tax lists is probably the son of James Perkins, Sr. James Jr. was most likely born in 1770 or before, since only those males above age 16 were subject to the tithe. (Checking the first year of his appearance on the original lists could determine more accurately his year of birth.)

     (1) Henry PERKINS subsequently appears in the land record as grantee of 23a in 1793 and 25a in 1795, all located in the Big Levels north of Lewisburg. He is also recorded in the 1810 tax list of Greenbrier County with two white tithables. The will of Henry Perkins Sr., dated 6 Sept 1815 and probated 24 October 1815, names son Henry and daughters, Elizabeth, Jane, and Hannah. (Book 1, p.452) Although not listed in Henry's will, John Perkins is noted on the 1810 Greenbrier tax list as the "son of Henry."

     (2) James PERKINS does not appear in the grantee index of Greenbrier County in the period up to his death on 20 March 1825. He is listed as James Perkins Sr. in the 1810 tax list of Greenbrier, with one white tithable. His will was probated in May 1825 (Bk.1 p.684), naming wife Elizabeth, and children James, Elizabeth Spencer, Thomas, Samuel, Sarah Atha, Mariah Morrison, Levin, Masten, William, and Andrew, to whom James left land at the mouth of Muddy Creek.

     (3) Eli PERKINS undertook a number of land transactions after 1800. In 1802 he was grantee to 124a in the Big Levels, and subsequently purchased tracts of 100a, 157a, 82a, and 117a on the waters and headwaters of Culbertson Creek, about 4 miles west of Franklin. His will, dated 15 Sept 1834, was written after his first wife Esther had died and Eli had remarried to Mary Nichols on 30 Aug 1833. (Bk.2, p.127) In it, he names his wife Mary, sons Thomas, David, Eli, Samuel, and James, and daughters Polly Griffith, Nancy, and Betsey. Daughter Caty Perkins, who had married James Hughart on 24 Dec 1818, was dead by the time Eli wrote his will, as seen by his request to buried at the "Salem Meeting House" beside his "wife Esther and daughter Caty." The will was probated at the June 1843 County Court session. Several Salem churches are located in Greenbrier (one on the Meadow River northwest of Blue Sulphur Springs, another in Caldwell, and one in the Big Levels), and it is likely that Eli was buried at the one in the Big Levels.

James, Henry, and Eli Perkins are most likely brothers who came to Greenbrier County shortly after the Revolutionary War. It is still unclear where they came from. Eli's enlistment in Botetourt County does not necessarily indicate that he resided in Botetourt; the Botetourt tax lists of 1782-1785 do not list any Perkins. In the Valley of Virginia, a Perkins family was living in Frederick County in 1782: Isaac Perkins is listed as head of a 9-person family. The Perkins name, however, was quite common in Virginia in the 1780s; Perkins families are found in nearly all the counties on the east side of the Blue Ridge, and in counties along the York and James Rivers. Any of these families could potentially be related to Eli and his brothers, if indeed Eli, Henry and James were born in Virginia.

Henry Hedrick

M, #9846, b. before 1740, d. 1800
Birth*before 1740 Henry was born before 1740.
Marriage* He married Elizabeth (?).
Henry Hedrick apparently had two wives, and both of them may have been named Elizabeth. In his will date 1 November 1800, Henry directed that daughters Elizabeth and Catherine receive 15 pounds "by reason they have each of them already received fifteen pounds after the death of their mother." In the death record of son Christopher, son by his first wife, his parents were listed as "Henry & Elizabeth." His second wife was Elizabeth and was named survivor and executor in his will.
Residence*May 1778 Henry Hedrick resided at Greenbrier Co, VA, in May 1778. Henry Hedrick was listed as having taken refuge in Fort Donnally at the time of the Indian attack in May 1778.1
Marriage* He married Elizabeth 'Betsy'
Will*1 Nov 1800 He made a will at Greenbrier Co, VA, on 1 Nov 1800.
In the name of God Amen. I Henry Haderick of Greenbrier County and State of Virginia being in perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God calling unto mind the mortality of my Body and that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament to bring the following manner. This is to say principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul to the Almighty God who gave it and my body to the Earth to be interred in a Christian manner at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting but I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God at the General Resurrection. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give and bequeath the same in the following manner. Viz:

First I order all my just Debts to be paid as soon as possible after my decease. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth my plantation and all the land whereon I now live; and also all my horses, cattle, sheep and hogs with my farming utensils with every appurtenance belonging there unto during her natural life time. But if she should marry again the following division immediately to take place, except the thirds of my planation she shall have use for her lifetime and after her decease it shall be divided equally amongst my three sons Frederick, William [and] Joseph and after her decease the plantation shall be equally divided between my three sons Frederick, William and Joseph.
