ALDERSON — The Honorable Judge Charles M. Lobban, age 80, of Alderson, passed away on Monday, May 23, 2011 at his home in Alderson, surrounded by loving family members, following a long illness.

Born July 9, 1930 in Hinton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Floyd G. Lobban II and the late Marion Nelson Lobban. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd G. Lobban III; and a sister, Isabel Lobban Mann.

Judge Lobban attended Alderson Schools and Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, W.Va. He graduated with a degree in Commerce and later earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served his country in Korea during the Korean Conflict.

Judge Lobban practiced law in Charlottesville for one year and then returned to his hometown of Alderson to run his family’s furniture store, F. G. Lobban Furniture Company and practice law. He served the Town of Alderson as its volunteer attorney. He then joined the Fred Sawyer law practice in Hinton where one of his projects was to do the law work to obtain Pipestem State Park. Later he joined the Haynes and Ford Law Firm in Lewisburg.

Judge Lobban was elected Circuit Court Judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit which consisted of four counties at the time: Greenbrier, Monroe, Summers, and Pocahontas. He remained in the job as judge for 20 years. Following retirement, he served as Senior Status Judge where he mediated cases.

Judge Lobban was a member and elder of the Alderson Presbyterian Church, a member of Tri County Memorial VFW Post 6723, Alderson, a member of the Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 AF & AM, and was a 65-year member of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department in which he was awarded life membership. He was a former longtime chairman of the Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee and was a former Greenbrier County Democrat of the Year. He was a pioneer and passionate member of the Alderson 4th of July Committee for over three decades.

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Marjorie McVey Lobban of Alderson; two daughters, Lizabeth Rogers and her husband, Jeff, of Alderson, and Lori Anderson and her husband, Brian, of Houston, Texas; two sons, Charles M. Lobban Jr. of Alderson, and Dr. John H. Lobban and his wife, Krista, of Morgantown; 12 grandchildren, Joshua Rogers and his wife, Becky, Dr. Jillian Rogers, Jo Ellen Rogers, Karlee Lobban, Kendra Lobban, Kasey Lobban, and Kara Lobban, all of Morgantown, Dr. Jane Rogers, Jordan Anderson, Mallori Anderson, Levi Anderson, and Alec Anderson, all of Houston, Texas; one great-grandson, Zackary Rogers of Morgantown; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Alderson Presbyterian Church, Alderson, W.Va., with the Reverend Lanny Howe officiating. Burial will follow at the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson, W.Va.

Friends may call Wednesday, May 25, 2011 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Serving as pallbearers will be H.R. McVey III, Dean Butler, Lee Skaggs, Greg Eary, Frankie Jones, Jerry Kyle, Tod Hanger, and Mark Ballard. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department, past and present Judges of the State of West Virginia, past and present members of the Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Monroe, and Summers County Bar Associations, and past and present members of the Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Monroe, and Summers County Sheriff’s Departments.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations of sympathy be made in his honor to the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, P.O. Box 647, Alderson, WV 24910.
