Amy Alderson1
F, #3502, b. 5 Nov 1778, d. 30 Jan 1865
Research Note* | | There are no documents currently known that lists all of Major & Amy's children. No wills have been found or other records that would have named the children. The most credible source for the family composition comes from a biographical statement by Aaron Dodson, son of Fletcher A. Dodson, transcribed in the Noble family history, who noted that his grandfather had "13 children, 8 sons and 5 daughters, all grown up and married." The only son named in this statement was Fletcher A. Dodson.
The Noble history includes a statement that "Major Dodson and Amy Anderson [sic: Alderson] Dodson's family was: 1. Elijiah 2. Ezekiah 3. Fletcher A. 4. Eli 5. Enoch 6. Thomas 7. Major Jr."
The History of Greene Co, IL, p. 750 (1879) also notes that Major Dodson “married Miss Amy Alderson, of Fairfax County, Virginia, by whom he had a family of had thirteen children; Ely was a successful physician; Elijah, the second child, became a prominent minister; Enoch became a successful practicing physician; Ezekiel also turned his attention to the ministerial profession; Levy, entered the Mexican service of 1846, and was killed in action while a soldier under General Taylor, while Thomas, the father of him whose name heads this column, became a school teacher.” The History of Macoupin Co, IL, p 498-500 (1911) states that Major Dodson “engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death and reared his family, which contained five sons and four daughters.” The article mentions by name only Elijah, Ezekiah, and Eli. Daughter Malinda, who married Henry Greer is named in the biography of Henry Greer, but her parents are not mentioned. In a genealogy.com posting in 2010 (https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/dodson/3971/), the poster cites information contributed by Viola I. Dyer of Toleda, Washington, of unknown date, that, in addition to the children listed above, adds Jane Dodson md. James B. Allen; Lucinda Dodson, md. C.A. Kugler, and David Dodson, md Nancy Harryman, for a total of 10 children. Her list does not include Levi Dodson. She also suggests that Silas Dodson may be an 11th child, but he is actually the son of Elijah Dodson. The death certificate of Nancy Paine in Jackson Co, IL in 1920 lists her parents as Major Dodson and Amy Alderson, and gives her date of birth as 1828. This late date is questionable for Nancy to be a daughter, as Amy would have been 50 at the time of her birth. Nancy may have been a granddaughter raised by her grandparents. Analysis of the 1810-1840 censuses supports the following as the 13 children of Major and Amy Dodson, including a 5th unknown female: Levi Dodson (57658), b. say 1799, d. 1846 Elijah Dodson (4274), b. circa 1799 at Clark Co, KY, d. Jun 1859 at Macoupin Co, IL Fletcher A. Dodson (4282), b. 17 Feb 1802 at KY, d. 1873 Ezekiel Dodson (4275), b. circa 1802 at Clark Co, KY, d. 9 Feb 1870 Eli Dodson (4273), b. 19 Dec 1805 at Clark Co, KY, d. 16 Feb 1876 at Macoupin Co, IL Jane Dodson (4276), b. circa 1806 at Clark Co, KY Thomas Dodson (4277), b. circa 1810 at Clark Co, KY, d. 25 Nov 1855 at Kane, Greene Co, IL Unknown female Dodson (57749), b. 1810-1820 Enoch H. Dodson (4279), b. circa 1816 at IN, d. 20 Mar 1879 at Jackson Co, IL David Dodson (4278), b. say 1818, d. circa 1850 Lucinda Dodson (57744), b. circa 1819 at IN Malinda Dodson (57697), b. 5 Apr 1820 at IN, d. 24 May 1890 at Woodburn, Macoupin Co, IL Nancy Dodson (57741), b. 29 Feb 1828 at IL, d. 30 Oct 1920 at Bradley, Jackson Co, IL.2,3 |
