Biography* J.G. Lobban was the son of William and Sallie A. Lobban and was born in Nelson County, Virginia, on March 18, 1834. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he organized and became the Captain of Company F attached to the 49th Virginia Infantry with the Army of Northern Virginia. He fought in all the important engagements from First Bull Run until he was captured in October 1864 at the battle of Cedar Creek. He spent the rest of the war in a Federal Prisoner of War Camp at Fort Delaware, but upon being released came to Palestine and set up a mercantile store. He had married Sallie A. Alderson (daughter of John Marshall Alderson) on September 3, 1863. In 1876 he moved to Alderson, later setting up his mercantile business on Railroad Avenue and building a fine home on Monroe Street. He served as State Senator from 1882 to 1886 from the Eighth Senatorial District.

Soon after his term in the Legislature he quit the mercantile business and became a traveling salesman for a large Richmond, Virginia, company, a profession he followed for more than 20 years. He was one of the most respected and highest paid men on the road. he was universally liked, all agreeing on his fine character and upright, moral life.

In religious matters, he was reared a Presbyterian, but was baptized into the Baptist Church at Alderson in October 1873 remaining very active in church affairs. He was for many years a deacon of the church and a trustee of same.

About 1905 he retired from his traveling job and became active in community affairs and politics. In 1908 he was a candidate for Presidential Elector and polled 110,000 votes, more than any other Republican candidate for any office in West Virginia. Biography* Floyd Gilmer Lobban was born on March 2, 1869, at Palestine near Alderson, the son of Capt. John G. Lobban and Sallie Alderson Lobban. Shortly after, his family moved to Alderson, where his father engaged in business. Mr. Lobban received his education in the Alderson schools and early engaged in business. He purchased the South Alderson Livery Stable in 1895 and operated it successfully for nine years. In 1901 he formed a partnership with his brother, John N. Lobban, in the furniture businesss. Also in 1901 he opened a funeral parlor and for many years was prominently connected with the State Embalmers Commission. Mr. Lobban was also active in political matters, having been elected Mayor of Alderson in 1901 and again in 1933. He was an ardent Democrat and in 1912 was elected Chairman of the Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee and held that post until 1920. He was elected to the State Democratic Committee in 1932 and served for four years. Mr. Lobban was a faithful member of the Greenbrier Baptist Church and was prominent in church affairs. He was also a member of Alderson Lodge No. 70, A.F. & A.M., and the local chapter of the Modern Woodmen of America. He was united in marriage with Miss Isabel Lewis, late of Cincinnati, Ohio, on April 18, 1900, and of this union were born three children: F.G. Lobban, Jr., C.L. Lobban and R.B. Lobban. Mr. Lobban died on March 27, 1937, at the age of 68 years after a long period of ill health due to a serious heart condition. [From Thomas W. "Lilly Alderson, widow of Joseph N. Alderson, died at her home in Alderson on Friday 10 Jun 1910 at noon, of asthma. She was a Baptist. She was born 55 years ago in Kanawha Co., daughter of the late Dr. Putney of Malden. Two children survive: Miss Alethea Alderson and Mr. Joseph N. Alderson, Jr.. She had 3 sisters and 1 brother, one of whom died 3 Jun 1910. She was buried at the Greenbrier Baptist Church on Sunday, by her husband's side.".3

Biography* JOSEPH N. ALDERSON, JR.

The subject of this sketch, the present postmaster of Alderson, is the seventh in descent from John Alderson, the founder of the town of Alderson. Joseph N. Alderson, Sr., a well known merchant of the place, was the son of John Marshall and Cornelia (Coleman) Alderson. He was born February 20, 1848, and died August 10, 1901. His wife was Lillie Putney, daughter of Richard Putney, of Kanawha county, whom he married October 20, 1875. Their children were: James Moseley (deceased) ; Joseph N. Alderson, Jr., Aletha Todd Alderson, and Marshall Putney Alderson (deceased).

Joseph N. Alderson, Jr., was born June 8, 1887, and was educated and reared in the town of his birth. On February 14, 1911, he married Miss Frances Richardson, daughter of William Richardson, of Huntington. To this union were born Frances Aletha and Alice Todd Alderson. Mr. Alderson has been a successful merchant and business man in Alderson and was connected with the First National Bank of that place for several years. He has been postmaster of Alderson since February 19, 1914.

Frances Alderson Swope, 96, of Harrisonburg, and formerly of Lewisburg and Alderson, W.Va., died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Center in Harrisonburg following a short illness.

Mrs. Swope was born Dec. 5, 1911, in Richmond, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Newman and Frances Richardson Alderson.

She was a retired librarian, retiring in 1967 from the Kanawha County Public Library in Charleston, W.Va., where she served as chief extension librarian. She was a teacher at Alderson High School from 1933-1939 and was an extension librarian at the Circleville Public Library in Circleville, Ohio and at the Yale University Library in New Haven, Conn.

Mrs. Swope was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy as a reserve officer, stationed in New York City from 1942-1945. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in West Virginia, the West Virginia Historical Society and the Greenbrier Historical Society, where she served as volunteer archivist for 29 years. She was a member of Alderson Presbyterian Church in Alderson, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Dabney Swope.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanne Swope Weikel of Lewisburg, W.Va., and Lee Swope Smith of Singers Glen; a sister, Alice Todd Alderson of Alderson, W.Va; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Sunday in the Meredith Chapel at Sunnyside Retirement Community with the Revs. Paul O'Gorek and Tom Smith officiating. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery in Alderson, W.Va., with the Rev. Billy Reed Wickline officiating.

Friends may visit from 1-1:45 p.m. today at the Lobban Funeral Home in Alderson, W.Va.

ALDERSON — Julia Alderson Fletcher, age 102, of Alderson, died Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, W.Va., following a long illness.

Born September 14, 1908 in Alderson, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Marshall Alderson II and the late Florence Hodges Alderson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. James Jackson Fletcher, who was killed in Italy while serving in combat during World War II; two brothers, John Marshall Alderson III and James Powell Alderson; three sisters, Gladys Alderson, Cornelia Alderson Smith, and Florence Alderson Kirby; and a niece, Mary Alderson Graham.

Mrs. Fletcher attended school in Alderson and graduated from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond, Va., with majors in physics and math. In 1972 she retired after serving many years as secretary to the Adjutant General of West Virginia in Charleston, and at that time, returned to Alderson to make her home. She was a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, W.Va.

Survivors include two nieces, Florence Smith McCarthy of Huntington, W.Va., and Harriet Smith Powell and her husband, Douglas, of Newport News, Va; two nephews, John Marshall Alderson IV and his wife, Betty, of Alderson, W.Va., and Richard Fletcher and his wife, Jeanie, of Charleston, W.Va. She is also survived by many grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces, great grand nephews and her very special caregivers.

Graveside services and burial will be Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson, W.Va., with Dr. Bill Bryan officiating.

Donations of sympathy in Mrs. Fletcher’s memory may be made to The Alderson Memorial Bridge Trust Fund, c/o Tammy Smith Skaggs, 605 West Maple Avenue, Alderson, WV 24910 or to a charity of one’s choice.
