Biography* "Rev. Lewis A. Alderson was the youngest son of Squire Joseph Alderson and grandson of Rev. John Alderson, Jr. he was born in 1812 at North Alderson, in Greenbrier County in the large stone house built in 1789, and now owned by Mr. Joseph S. Thurman. He graduated at the University of Ohio at Athens, Ohio, in 1832, and the day after he married Miss Lucy B. Miles, of Athens. He brought her home but she lived but three months. In 1838, while pastor of Grace Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Va., he married Miss Eliza Floyd Coleman, daughter of Capt. John Coleman, of Amherst Co., Va. They had eight children, one a daughter. The eldest son was Joseph Coleman Alderson, of Charleston, W.Va. He and Mrs. Church J. White, of Atcheson, Kansas, and Lewis A., of Sheridan, Wyoming, are all now living. Rev. Lewis A. Aldereson went to Atcheson and built the first Baptist Church in 1858, mostly with his own means. he and Dr. L.H. Kalloch, founded Ottawa University, one of the largest educational institutions west of the Mississippi River. He died and was buried at Atcheson in 1881. From "The Alderson Family" in History of Charleston and Kanawha County, by W.S. Laidley, Richmond-Arnold Publishing Co., IL, 1911, p. 1013.

"Lewis Allen Alderson, born May 5, 1812, graduated at the University of Ohio and entered the Baptist Ministry, married on September 24, 1832, Lucy B. Myles, of Athens, Ohio, who lived a few months only. Then when minister of the Grace Street Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia, he married June 26, 1838, Eliza Floyd Coleman, of Amherst County. He organized the Greenbrier Agricultural Society and was its first president. With his family, he moved on April 7, 1858 to Atchinson and became a prominent minister in Kansas. He died there on May 19, 1881. Their eight children were: Joseph Coleman Alderson, born October 29, 1839, married Mary Price, the daughter of Virginia's Civil War Lieutenant Governor. he was a Lieutenant in the 14th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. He died without issue. The other children, Floyd Powell, Irving Newman, Lindsay, Cary Trimble, and Walter Wyatt, scattered over the Mid-West, leaving many descendants." From "Data Requested by the Library of Congress to Accompany the Colonel C.N. Feamster Manuscripts" (ca. mid-1950s).

"The late L.A. Alderson came to Atchison April 24, 1858, on Friday, and preached the following Sunday in the office of S.C. Pomeroy, corner of Second and Atchison streets, which is still standing. He was a Baptist minister, and came from Alderson, W.Va., a town named in his honor. He brought $40,000 in gold to the country, and was one of the first bankers. In 1864, he opened a bookstore, which may be seen in one of the old street scenes illustrated in this issue. He gave $2,000 in cash toward building the present Baptist Church, and preached three years without pay. Dr. W.L. Challiss gave a similar amount toward building the Baptist church, and these two men supported it a great many years. Mr. Alderson died in 1881. His wife and five children survive him." [From undated and untitled article (evidently an old newspaper clipping), from Norman Hemphill, 1990: Includes portrait photograph.]

"First Baptist Church. - The founder of the First Baptist Church of Atchison is, without doubt, Rev. James M. Challiss, father of George T. Challiss, was located on the present site of the city, in September, 1854. During the next three years, Luther, Dr. W. L. and Joseph Challiss, children all of that Christian old clergyman, then living away off in New Jersey, settled in Atchison; and it was the repeated prayer of the father that the community in which they lived should not longer exist without holy influence of religion, which finally induced Luther to donate a fine piece of ground, on the corner of Kansas avenue and Ninth street. Aided by the Cohansey Church, of Cumberland County, New Jersey, of which the Rev. Mr. Challiss was pastor, sufficient funds were raised to complete a substantial brick edifice, by September, 1858. The Methodists had previously erected a small building, so that this was the second one in Atchison, and the first Baptist meeting-house in the State of Kansas.

It was on the 24th of April, 1858, that Rev. L. A. Alderson, who had been for years a laborer in the pastoral, Sunday-school and missionary fields in Virginia, came to reside in Atchison. Rev. James Shaw, the Methodist Minister, had been invited to conduct the services, but being unable to attend, and Mr. Alderson having landed the previous night from the steamboat, arrangements were at once made by which he should preach the pioneer Baptist sermon. The services were conducted in Gen. S. C. Pomeroy's office, a small brick building opposite the old National Hotel, on Atchison street. Regular services were held, a few Sabbaths afterwards, in a room previously occupied as a saloon, on Commercial street, near the wharf. On August 1, 1858, a church was organized, the place of meeting at that time being a room in Allen's building, corner of Commercial and Second streets. Those who then united in church relation were Rev. L. A. Alderson and wife, Mrs. Mary A. Challiss, J. C. Allen and wife, Aaron Stephenson and wife, Deacon Thomas Wise, Wilberforce Dunlevy, and a few days thereafter, Dr. Wm. L. Challiss. The next month the church was completed at a cost of $5,000, and the church was established on a substantial basis. In May, 1861, Rev. Mr. Alderson, who had been pastor of this church since 1858, was succeeded by Rev. A. Perkins, D. D. Rev. Frank Remington commenced his pastorate in May, 1864, serving only a few months, being followed by Rev. J. W. Warder. Rev. H. A. Guild came in May, 1867; Rev. I. Sawyer, D. D., July 1868; Rev. E. Gunn, August, 1870; Rev. J. B. Hardwicke, November, 1873; Rev. W. T. Fleenor, June, 1877; Rev. J. W. Luke, August, 1880. The Church is now among the strongest in the city, having a membership of (about) 200 - a cause for just rejoicing when the contrast is made with that little band of nine who constituted the First Baptist Church of Atchison, a quarter of a century ago." From William G. Cutler, History of the State of Kansas, Chicago, IL: A. T. Andreas, 1883, posted online at http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/atchison/atchison-co-p8.html, accessed Dec 2007.)

Biography* Obituary of Thomas Creigh McCleary Alderson (from a Lebanon, VA newspaper?)

Wednesday morning, March 22, 1876. As we sit down to write the sad intelligence is spreading from house to house 'Col. Alderson is dead' and although the deceased had been lingering for some time, the announcement of his death will produce a shock all over the county, where he was so well and favorably known. Col. T.C.M. Alderson, the son of Col. George Alderson, was born in the county of Greenbrier, now West Va., on the 17th day of Nov. 1817, and hence at the time of his death was 58 years 4 months and 5 days old. He first came to this county, at the age of fourteen, and commenced business in Lebanon, as salesman for Thos. McClary, remaining with him we understand about two years; when he returned to Greenbrier, and attended school for a year or two, and then came back to Russell, at the age of eighteen and reentered the store of Mr. McClary. Within a short time after this he and Dr. E.D. Kernan purchased the stock of goods of Mr. McC., and commenced business under the style of Alderson & Kernan, which was continued for about twenty yeaars. This association so long and pleasantly continued, was dissolved a few years ago, since which time Col. Alderson has been conducted the business at the old stand. Col. A. was married on the 26th day of Sept., 1844, to Miss Nancy Dickenson of this county, and resided in Lebanon, from that time until his death; which occurred this (Wednesday) morning at 7:45. Col. Alderson made a profession of religion many years ago, and united himself with the Lebanon Baptist Church; occupying all the time a prominent position, and during ...[missing]... not only of the baptist, but other churches. His liberal dispostion was always confidently relied upon for donations to all church and charitable objects, and his energy and readiness in devising plans and leading in the successful accomplishment for the benefit of the church, as well as other public enterprises of a commendable nature, was always conspicuous. No man perhaps was so extensively known to the men, women and children of Russell, as Col. Alderson; and none we are assured was more generally esteemed and loved. The life of Col. Alderson with all who knew him, will be a sufficient voucher for the character of his death and his future state. But in addition to his pious life we have the blessed assurance of many death-bed declarations of confidence and continued trust in the redeemer. Hope! sweet hope! blessed hope! glorious hope! was one of his expression of christian triumph but a few days previous to his departure. it was not our purpose however to attempt a regular obituary of the deceased, as that will doubtless be furnished soon by one more intimately acquainted with his history; but simply to give a brief sketch while the death of our dear friend was fresh in our memory. Than Col. Alderson there never lived, we feel safe in asserting, a more devoted husband, affectionate father, accommodating neighbor and useful citizen of his county. He leaves a disconsolate widow, four sons, a son-in-law, two daughers and three daughters-in-law to mourn his departure. The family have we are assured the profound sympathy of the entire community. (from T.G. Alderson, Banner Elk, NC, Sept. 1989.)
