Death* | 23 Nov 2020 | Miriam died on 23 Nov 2020 at Menifee, Riverside Co, CA, at age 91. Age 91, passed away in Menifee, CA on November 23, 2020. She was born Miriam Alma Firebaugh on February 14, 1929 in Wooster, Ohio to George Marshall and Lillian Mary (Coffman) Firebaugh. George was a well known farmer in the area. He and Lillian raised nine children of which Miriam was the third youngest. Determined from an early age, she decided to change her name from Miriam to Marian while her second grade teacher Mrs. Franks looked on without comment. One room school houses were the norm at that time in Wooster and she received her primary education at two such schools in the area, 'Science Point' being the most memorable. Marian graduated from Shreve High School, Wooster in 1946 and began college at North Central College, Naperville, Illinois. She transferred to Miami at Oxford, Ohio in her senior year, graduating with a BA in English in 1951. Marian cherished her college years, enjoying her new found independence and the many friends she made along the way. She was always proud that she was able to pay for her education, working for a year after high school and during summers as a waitress in a Cleveland restaurant. While working as a secretary at a General Electric plant in Cincinnati she met and began dating Robert A. Vermillion, an engineer at G.E. They married in 1953. The couple raised two sons, settling for awhile in the suburbs of Loveland, Ohio. When her sons were old enough she worked as a substitute teacher for the Loveland City School District. The family moved to California in 1966 when Robert's job was transferred to San Diego. After a year and a half in San Diego they moved to Ontario, CA finally settling in Corona, CA in 1971. Marian continued to work as a substitute teacher for the Corona Unified School District but soon tired of unruly students. After Marian and Robert divorced in 1977 she worked as a licensed vocational nurse for a time but decided nursing was not for her. She accepted a position as a secretary at the Norco Naval Weapons Fleet Analysis Center (FLTAC) in 1979 and worked at FLTAC until she retired almost 18 years later in 1997. By this time she had moved to Canyon Lake, CA to be closer to family. Marian, an accomplished pianist, had performed for her high school commencement exercises and other functions during her time in Wooster. She would occasionally end her day at home by sitting at the piano to play Debussy's 'Clare de Lune', Chopin, and other favorites. Her love of Classical music was instilled at a young age when her oldest brother Lawrence brought home several records of the Classics. Marian enjoyed attending Riverside County Philharmonic concerts for more than two decades with her family. She especially enjoyed the musical direction of the late Patrick Flynn. Marian cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and had a warm, lasting relationship with her daughter-in-law Kellee. She enjoyed family visits to Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Laguna Beach's Festival of Arts, San Diego Wild Animal Park, and whale-watching excursions. An avid reader, Marian also enjoyed long walks, gardening, crossword puzzles, watching 'Jeopardy' and programs on PBS. She enjoyed trips to Alaska in 1997 and to London and Paris in 2007. She especially enjoyed spending the day in Newport Beach, taking in the Pacific Ocean. She was fond of quoting from great works of Literature as well as favorite Bible passages from Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. In her later years she re-connected with her childhood friend Carol Marti Stewart and they enjoyed many correspondences. Marian is survived by her sons David (Kellee) Vermillion of Menifee and Mark Vermillion of Lake Elsinore; grandchildren Jeremy Vermillion, Jolene Cooney, and Jennifer Lindsey; great-grandsons Jacob and Samuel Lindsey; her brother John Firebaugh (Francille) of Columbus, Ohio as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Anne Baldridge and Della Daugherty; brothers, Lawrence Firebaugh, Wyman Firebaugh, Jay Firebaugh, and Wayne Firebaugh. Her brother Daniel Firebaugh passed away November 25, 2020. Marian's wishes were to have neither a public service nor memorial and suggested that for those who wish, to make a donation to The World Wildlife Fund.2 |
