Jeanne Bruce Swope Weikel

Jeanne Bruce Swope Weikel, 71, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, following a long illness.

Born in Princeton, WV, in 1944, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth Dabney Swope, Emily Poston Swope and Frances Alderson Swope.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Lewisburg Police Chief Richard Edgar Weikel, Jr.

She is survived by: sister, Lee Swope Smith, of Lexington, VA; daughters, Susan Emily Hur and Deborah Jean Weikel; and son, James Kenneth. She was blessed with four grandchildren, Rachel Boiteau, Nicholas Boiteau, Rebecca Boiteau and Ryan Hur. She was loved by her extended family; brother-in-law, Robert; son-in-law, Rob; daughter-in-law, Tina; and her nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Jeanne attended Princeton High School, Greenbrier College for Women and Greenbrier Community College; but her love was always the care and well-being of children. At Old Stone Presbyterian Church, she was a Sunday school teacher, kept the church nursery, taught for the Mom’s Morning Out program, sang in the church choir, and was a four-in-hand handbell ringer. Her favorite and most gratifying job was with the Children’s Home Society, where she served as a childcare advocate. She was a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church and previously a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church and Alderson Presbyterian Church. Among her many interests and memberships were the Greenbrier Historical Society, the Red Hat Society, the Democratic Executive Committee and the Wives of the Chiefs of Police of WV. She participated in prayer and women’s circle groups at Lewisburg United Methodist and Old Stone Presbyterian Church. After her cancer diagnosis in 2012, she pulled her family close and set out to see and do as much as she could with her remaining time. Thanks to all who cared for her and made her life rich these last few years.

Jeanne was remembered during services on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Lewisburg United Methodist Church in Lewisburg where Pastor Rick Brown officiated. Burial followed at the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson where she joined seven generations of her family including her beloved husband, father and step-mother.

The family received friends and family at the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Lewisburg United Methodist Church and the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia. For more information and to donate, visit http://childhswv.org/.
